Re: Money-saving tips
Good tip, I know a lot of people who use it. I use the filter floss myself because I can't get stuffing anywhere in town, and even that saves me a BUNDLE on cartridges.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Re: Money-saving tips
Craigslist is definitely a huge money saver. In my area there was a 75g with no problems for $40. No stand or lid but still.
Also, lego's are officially aquarium safe. You can buy pounds of them on ebay for very cheap to build places for your fish to swim around and hide in. Another great benefit is your fish cannot outgrow them. If they get too big for an entrance, just make the entrance bigger. That will save a lot of money over petsmart decorations.

Re: Money-saving tips
Cut down on the hours you keep the lights on. It will even help on the algae in your tank, but mostly on your electrisity bill.
Don't buy second hand heaters. You don't know how old it is, and what it has been trough before you bought it. There's a danger of the heater breaking, and then you can end up with a tank full of boiled fish.
If you have the chance to store the water before pumping it into the tanks (when you're doing water changes), fill cold water in the bin you store the water in, and let it get hotter because of the heat in the room. It will help on the electrisity bill. Probably not very much, but still some.
