open top tank

Post by Mezzovex »

I have a fahaka in a 55g tank right now. I had a piece of glass cut for a top piece, but its a bit too small. I was wondering if it would be ok for me to leave it without the top since i worry about it falling in. Do Fahakas have a history of jumping?
Tanks I currently own:

125g freshwater tank w\ 30g sump, 840gph pump, ocean clear canister filter,
20" fire eel, and Dib the Fahaka

55g freshwater tank w\ Magnum 330 filter
Tigger the South American Puffer

5.5g nano saltwater tank
Clean up crew + coral + a strawberry dottyback

I'd be very worried about your Fahaka jumping out! They are notorious jumpers and can jump with some force too.

All fish are jumpers, and puffers are worse than average. I cover every bit of open space on the tops of all my tanks!

Several months ago, someone posted a pic of an absolutely stunning open-top tank. The puffer jumped and died perhaps a week later.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

If you're afraid of the glass falling in, then just cover the tank temporarily with something else until you can get the right size glass cut. Better to be safe than sorry.

I've had my tank for 2 years this coming August and I haven't had a top on it this entire time. Ive been drawing out templates ever since I got the tank because it has a wave in it *as you can see*. I have a Fahaka thats grown from 5-12" in that time and Ive never had a problem other than a few Giant Danios that thought they could fly... but thats basically because fata$$ was chasing them!

I've lost 3 puffers to jumping, and they all jumped from tanks that did have a cover. They must have jumped out of the feeding hole. So you absolutely need a cover for your tank.

LOL WoW your puffers like to jump! Mine just likes to splash water out of the tank and push his teeth up against it when he sees me walking to the kitchen and stuffing my face with food! For the most part he watches TV with me and or watches me sit here and type... I think he was re-writing Einsteins Theory on the glass the other day... He knows jumping is BAD! ;) LoL

I have to say that I've lost puffers from jumping as well, but like Troender, mine jumped from tanks with covers. Both tanks have covers, but only to the stress bars on the sides, so I guess they've jumped out of that 2" opening by my hang-on filter. :?

I'm friends with the manager of a LFS and they came in one morning to find their lineatus dead on the floor because it jumped out. Taught them a lesson, unfortunately at the cost of the puffer's life. :(

You found your Fahaka stuck to the filter tube? And I suppose he didn't make it? Oh, I'm so sorry. I've always heard that Fahakas were well-known jumpers though, so I'd just be cautious. Sorry for your loss. :(

Seriously!?!? Fahakas are known as jumpers? That just blows my mind! Mine would rather spew water out of the tank than come outside! But he will follow wherever u go! ;)
