Your tank is NOT cycled. All the 2 weeks bacteria was wasted. I feel bad sorry you didn't know. But what you should do immediatly is a 80% water change or if you have another cycled tank drip acclimate them to that tanks water. And recycle the tank they are in. If that's not a possibility then you need to change nearly all the water daily to get rid of the nitrite and ammonia. Go get some instant ocean salt. Alot Or a few bags or a bucket. You'll need it. Do a water change and decrease the sg by .002 to 1.013 from 1.015. The next day another change to 1.011 from 1.013 and so on back down to fw. Or around 1.002. It' ll recycle a lil faster. By the end of the week your sg should be low almost fw. And as it is fw or a lil above continue wc until nitrite and ammonia is zero and you only show a lil nitrate. Example would be like my tank is cycled it's showing nitrate 20 nitrite 0 ammonia 0. That's a cycled tank. Cycled means the ammonia and nitrite is being converted in to a lesser toxic nitrate. Nitrite and ammonia can be deadly. Even if it's a lil tiny bit. Atleast you have em in a small tank so the wc will be daily and smaller. And should cycle farely quickly within two-3 weeks if you do daily wc. Do not miss one or your efforts can be wasted. Once you cycled it do smaller 25% weekly or 50% bi weekly. You want your nitrates to stay under 20 bc above that can cause stress or harm to fish.

Yes. 75-80% daily. Reducing the sg by .002 or if you know a store that could hold while you cycle the tank at your desired salinity. They are fish for an experienced fish keeper. They do make you their slave but it'll all be worth it. Bc they are unlike any other fish and real cute. Lol. If your at 1.015 now in one week youl be at 1.002. So the water changes you'll make will be hardly any mixing salt. Just tap water with dechlorinator. And some salt. Once your ammonia is zerO and nitrite is zero then raise your salinity by .002 a week no more than .002 or you'll kill the filter bacteria you worked so hard to establish When you start raising the sg AFTER the tank has recycled. Then you must consider. Do I want high-end BW or SW. They do best in SW but can thrive in bw conditions aswell.

moving back to freshwater will definitely make this easier. you can make with a smaller tank for a a month or 3. stay calm and be diligent with the water changes.

Wait, why'd you get a 10gal?
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

I might just be overly confused but the 10gal won't be cycled either and will need more water changes through the entire process than the 40gal would...

Ok, got it now  Apparently I need to go to bed. The sad thing is I read the thread again and still couldn't figure it out... Sometimes I scare myself

If you transfer the gsp back to fw is needs to be a slow drip style acclimation. Don't put them in fw right away after being in 1.015. That's why I said when you do your daily wc to rid the tank of ammonia and nitrite. And at the same time slowly dropping the salinity to not shock the puffers and not to waste all your salt while doing water changes daily for a few weeks. Get it.

Yup now with your other 10g tank which had fish in.. that will need to be 1.015 like the other tank so that the puffers dont die.. but that will kill the bacteria in there too.
Unless it was a salt tank already.
If not, you're going to have to cycle the big tank and change the water in the 10g everyday like you would of with the big unfortunatly.

I frequently use 10 and 20 gallons for hospital/quarantine tanks. As long as your puffs are 2 inches or less they should be relatively ok in a 10 gallon for a week or two.

However..you must provide a cave or something for them to sleep in...especially since the tank is small..they need an area to claim as a territory..

You also must check your levels every day and be prepared to do daily water changes.

If the ten is fresh, I would acclimate the puffs back down to fresh over a couple of hours doing a drip...

While they are in the ten I would go ahead and treat for parasites...

It may be possible. They'd definetly be happier. But if you do a 75 and add live rock and subtrate or whatever you lose water volume. Some can be made up for in the use of a sump. Someone here siad they'd go 30 for one and 20 for every1 after the first 30g for one puff. I have two in a 55 but they tend to hang out together during the day. I'd chance it with a 75. Curious if your gonna keep them in marine or high BW?
