My GSP layed eggs?
My GSP layed eggs?
Hey kids.... Im pretty new to puffers, I have Crays and Gourami in my main tank and I just started a new tank ( yes i cycled it properly ) and picked up 3 little GSP's, after doing tons of research, all about 1.5 inches max. I have never seen this before but I seriously think someone layed some eggs, ill try to hook up some pix but there is one batch, I guess, in my gravel and it looks like a little white ball with a bunch of little white balls inside and some mucusy substance encasing it. there is also another "batch" attached to one of the large slate rocks in the tank. I really dont know what up and any help would be much appreciated. Ive seriously not even had them a week yet. If they are indeed little eggs id love to be able to take care of them properly and and help again would be swell. Thanks.
Re: My GSP layed eggs?
Ok upon further investigation Im like 80% sure these are eggs, im freakin out. I searched the crap out of my tank and found like 4 more "batches"!! One of them the balls in the sack are kinda yellow and way bigger than the other ones and the one GSP, doesnt even have a name yet!, will not leave them! AHHHHHHH!

Re: My GSP layed eggs?
Hey! I would very much doubt they are GSP eggs, as only recently been discovered how to breed them in captivity - & the conditions are extremely specific. Also if yours are only 1.5", then they are only juveniles.
More likely to be balls of poo - they can have the appearance of "egg sacs" if they need treating for internal parasites.
Pictures would be good though.

Re: My GSP layed eggs?
GSP's have never been bread in the home aquarium and, like Hilly said, that was done under strict control and it was actually not done naturally. GSP sperm was found to be viable only in marine conditions so it's highly unlikely that you would have eggs.

I'm agreeing with bigfatfish, I think what you are seeing is poop, not eggs at all, and if you are seeing that much, then your poor little guys need help quickly!

Re: My GSP layed eggs?
umm firstly you need to vacuum up all that poop immediatly (puffers are very sensitive to toxic waste)
secondly if the poop is stringy and seems like white pearly balls then that could be a sign of internal parasites..are their bellys sunken at all?
how big is the tank?
What have you been feeding them?
are they in freshwater at the moment? if so the other ppl will teach you how to slowly go about going brackish then full marine as gsp's are not freshwater puffs
for a head start you can take a look at some articles in the library
ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Brackish/T_Nigroviridis/
library/puffer-care/the-story-of-puffy- ... ed-puffer/
library/puffers-in-focus/an-introductio ... d-puffers/
library/hospital/internal-parasites-pre ... treatment/
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15647--gsps in marine
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1659--starting a brackish
all puffs need clean water as they are scaleless and very sensitive to toxic waste and spikes and are very messy eaters so be prepared to be their slave lol and clean up after them
Good luck

Moved to hospital in case of IPs. Please separate the "eggs" into a container of tank water and takes pictures, we can determine if they are IP infested poo, eggs from something else, or other... hopefully anyway.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.
