Clown Fish

Hey all,

Have any of you had any joy with your puffers in a tank with clown's?

I have my little Topaz puffer together with 4 Clown fish who get on great, bit of bossing around by the clown's at first but now they are all one hunting gang, he even host's some of the soft coral's with then.

I used to keep a GSP with a clown fish

They got along really well, I sold the clownfish when that GSP died though.

me too i have baby puffer fish with 2 clownfish..its happy to see them swimming and playing together..i think they play together i wish they will...hheheheheh..

would one of those things hurt a GSP?

I never had an anemone with my clownfish and he did great. He was a tough little bugger too, I'm fairly certain he thought he was a puffer too! He used to go after the crabs and snails I put in the tank, lol.

I had a pair of ORA black and white clowns with my takifugu niphobles, no problems.

Clowns dont need an anemone. They do just fine with out. Mine hosted the flower pot in the QT and when moved to the DT they hosted my derasa clam. It really pissed the clam off...

lol mine does the same. when i put a clam in there for the puffer. he goes over, nibbles the meat and then turns around and wiggles his tail on the clam trying to show the (dead)clam whos boss

i was going to take a picture of my puffer swimming by my clownfish while the clownfish is in his "anenome". i quote that because he has taken to this thing and protects it like its an anenome. everytime i move stuff around in the tank for the puffers "boredom" sake, he goes right back into this fake urn thing. even when i moved and had that fake urn in the water with the fish, the clownfish was right inside of it the whole time. he shoes the damsels away from his home, my starfish was slowly passing by this urn and as he was the clownfish starts backing up to the starfish and waving his tail at him. its quite a site to see him protect this thing like its his.

Sweet. Ima go get two baby clowns tomarrow. How big will they get. I want to have em in a 55 g tall with my gsp and yellow tail damsels. Any suggestions. Farm raised or not? Baby or adult? Two or one? What do y'all like more the orange ones? Black? Or ... Are the other colored clowns more or less aggresive. A guy asked me At work( he does sw) " am I established?". Does he mean is my tank cycled or within acceptable water parameters? Did I miss something about establishing a sw tank. My wP are perfect now. I had a slight ammonia jump two weeks ago when I added live rock. But it's all good now. Can I go back to raising the sg I'm aiming for 1.024. Is this high enough for a anemone for the clowns. Of coarse I won't add a nem yet bc I need a better light. Any one have a low profile marine light 36" wide and with day/night/moon lights. Lfs sells
it for 300$

I also want to get a cowfish or horned puffer and keep one gsp. Are they compatable. Isn't a cowfish a puffer too? Can I feed him the same stuff as the gsp. And how big will he get?

I don't believe any cowfish stay small enough for a 55g tank...if so, I'd love to get species names and info cuz I love them but have ruled them out for my 90 due to size...

All cowfish get huge, there's no way you'd get one to fit in a 55gallon.

Established tank means it's been cycled, has good water parameters, and has been set up for a while.

The Ocellaris Clownfish is my personal favorite It's a bit more mellow then Percula Clowns. Tomato Clowns are great too. The different colored clowns are more of a personal preference. The Black and White ones are usually much more expensive though. And I've always though the orange was a nice contrast to the green of the GSP

i used to have a wee boxfish, but they do grow and if they die in main tank, can nuke your tank as well

THX for the feedback ppl I taking in one of my gsp today so the stock would be two clown idk which ones yet, two gsp and two yellow tail damsels a few snails n a blue legged hermit crab. Any one have any suggestion for a sand sifting fish that might be safe with gsp n my other fish? Should I pick up supplements for the live rock. I read it needs calcium just for the live rock to thrive. Right now it's FOWLR thx again.

Dont waste $ with junk like purple up. You need to monitor and supplement calc/alk/mag and they need to be in the correct proportions to work.

Three main ways of supplementing are:
1. Two Part (with mag, easy and not equipment needed)
2. Kalkwasser (minor cheap equipment, easy, cheaper than 2part, but still might need occasional additions of two part to maintain balance, mag needed)
3. Calcium Reactor (expensive to start, cheap in long run, greater risks, but little to no daily maintenance, might still need occasional additions to maintain balance)

I think you are going to be way overstocked with the current plan, two GSP and a few damsels is all I would suggest. Skip the sand sifter, its not going to keep the tank any cleaner, just more bioload.

K well I already got it sorry. I really don't have room for a calcium reactor. Maybe in the future when I get a bigger tank. Stock is two gsp. Two damsel. One maroon clown. 12 hermit. 3 snails. I don't plan on adding anything else for a while. My quick ? Is.... The new maroon clown has a circle on one side before his back tale. It's slightly less colorful inside that circle. A lil less than dime sized. I think I can see thru him a bit it looks as if his spine shows thru the circle where there is a lil less pigmentation. If I had seen it in the store I wouldn't have gotten him. Could he just been getting bruised by others before I got him. Everyone is getting along well now. Gsp were curious at the soft corals and did try one but spit it out immediatly. Since then they are left alone for now. And also being protected by the damsels lol. We'll see how long that last I guess
