Why cap those off? Aren't you going to use the sump?

She plans to, but apparently the previous owners hacksawed all the PVC pipes apart to move the tank to storage, so it's going to be a PROJECT to re-plumb the whole thing. It's one of those pain in the neck, really old school, pre-acrylic opaque plastic sumps, too.

Hannah, as for the noise level, it's not a roar or anything - know when a refrigerators compressor turns on? Should be just a bit quieter than that, but all the time. Certainly won't make it hard to make a phone call near the tank, or drown out the volume of a movie on the projector even at a normal volume.

Just take your tine to rebuild correctly. Nothing worse than a leaky system!

I can't even begin to start rebuilding this mess of a sump. Almost every part is broken. :/ And any electrical component I would need has had the cord sawed through (wtf). I'll take some pictures, because it's crazy. I'm starting to freak out about whether or not this tank will hold water. I'm not sure what I'd do if it didn't...

Here's the cord to the pump...

And here's some of the cords to the lighting.

no wonder he sold it. I wouldn't want to deal with this mess either.

It was sitting out in a garage for who knows how long. :/ I wouldn't be surprised if rats had chewed it up.

For sealing the ports on the tank, silicone big PVC pipe caps over the whole mess, from the inside. Then you wont' have to worry about his seals leaking or holding. Just get it bonded between new PVC and clean glass on the inside, and water pressure will do the rest. You can piece together what needs to be replaced later, it's quite easy to slice off your plugs with a strait razor once the tank is drained down to half.

I'll see what I can get at menards. Hopefully they'll have everything I need.

Would it be worth it to silicone over all the seams in the corners of glass too? Who knows if those will hold either...

No where around here carries pvp pipe plugs in 1/2 sizes, and I need a 2.5" one. So I have to order it from online. :/

I checked Menards and Home Depot, they both told me to look online. ugh.

And I can only find one place online that carries them- though it seems to be a common size for fishtanks.. so I don't get it... Shipping is ridiculous too. It's $4 worth of pipe and $10 shipping- and that's with the slowest shipping.. which doesn't really work.

Just oversize. No difference when you're patching to the surrounding glass if it's a half inch larger, or a full inch. Just get a nice tight seal between the cap and the aquarium glass, and you'll be OK.
