Did you smell the shells?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Did I sniff the shells...
Well, I do sniff a lot of things but no I did not sniff those. I'm assuming one would do that to see if they were rotten? phew I'm pretty sure I'd gag if they were.
I should have some new water level numbers tonight.

Checked the numbers again last night. Nitrate is 20ppm.

IMO, the best way to clean an UGF is to remove the plate & clean all the gravel.

Re: Ammonia and Nitrite Low Nitrate High
You can fit a the tube part only from your gravel vac and shove it down through the riser tube and try to suck out as much as possible. Gravel vac unlikely to have tight enough a fit, and would just suck water off the top from around the riser.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

Thanks Nick! That's a great idea and I hadn't even though of using the gravel filter tube! : )

Glad to help. If I sleep, my brain is sometimes good for thinking.
