Got two 2" fahaka puffers imported from aquarium glaser

^ Don't take this the wrong way, but in all honesty you might as well go as big as you can to avoid having to setup a new tank at the start of every month till you reach the 125 you need, or else i have a feeling you might have a lot of spare tanks laying around...

I should've been more clear. I already HAVE all these tanks except for a 50g breeder (I planned on getting one anyway...I found an lfs near me that can get them in brand new for $50). Right now these extra tanks are empty, but I am in the process of finishing up a fish room in my garage for all my african cichlids and for their fry to grow out.

I don't want to put the puffer in the biggest tank I have available at the moment as I don't want to exactly encourage faster growth (more swimming room = more exercise = faster metabolism) yet as I don't want to put it in the 120g I have until early summer if I can get away with that...if not I will of course have to make an exception! LOL.

I am an experienced Malawi Cichlid ("peacocks" and haplochromines, not mbuna) breeder. Currently this is a master list of all the fish I keep (does not indicate quantities though):
Mostly malawi fish with the exception of a few wild catfish (phyllonemus typus, synodontis tanganicae), datnioides, fahaka puffer fish, etc.

Well today I went to my crappy LFS (NOT the one I sold the extra fahaka too) today to buy some individually frozen krill for the puffer as it is a hassle to break off exact pieces from a flatpack.

I decided to get 4 small snails. WAYYY overpriced $2/ea for half-inch size snails... This is why I was asking in another topic about breeding my own snails...

Anyway two of these snails were even bigger than the puffers head... So I didn't think twice about putting them in the 30g expecting him to maybe only eat one.


OHHHH no! He DESTROYED them all LOL! Needless to say he is extremely fat at the moment and I probably won't feed him again until maybe Monday at the earliest... With how fat he is now probably not until Wednesday :roll:.

It was neat watching him eat them though. At first he didn't know what to make of them and was very shy. But after the snails got back upright and started moving he knew they were food... He still didn't know what to do when he got over to where they were... He figured it out though eventually.



Now this brings me to another question...

Until he is big enough to start eating market shrimp, crabs or crayfish, mussells, etc... Does he need snails like once a week for example to keep the beak trimmed or is krill good enough at this point?

If you ever take a trip to New York State, check out Atlantis Tropical Fish Hatchery. Just rows and rows and rows and rows of fish tanks... I think their website says it is approximately 40,000 gallons. I think it is more though.

Ever get off a plane in the summer in a desert or in the tropics and get blasted with lava hot air? That's what it's like opening the door to get inside that facility LOL.
