Re: DIY Sump and pvc overflow
I just snag everything needed for a sump system. I got the sump, skimmer, return pump and overflow for less than 200$ and the overflow and return were brand new in the wrapping still. Just do some scouring on craigslist and you find everything you need for dirt cheap. Plus it'll always be a lot cleaner looking than a DIY setup. Check out youtube too fro DIY vidz they have something for everything.

Re: DIY Sump and pvc overflow
i am planning to use a 10g tank for a sump for a 55g tank. I was planning on just using my Magnum 330 canister filter to pump it back up.
Tanks I currently own:
125g freshwater tank w\ 30g sump, 840gph pump, ocean clear canister filter,
20" fire eel, and Dib the Fahaka
55g freshwater tank w\ Magnum 330 filter
Tigger the South American Puffer
5.5g nano saltwater tank
Clean up crew + coral + a strawberry dottyback

Only a ten gallon? You will be frustrated VERY fast. Grab a used 30 gallon, much more space to mess around in, makes tinkering down there so much easier. You will probably also want to get a powerhead for the tank if you don't already have one, since a magnum 330 is going to get well under 300gph with the height difference between the tanks, and you want 500-600gph flow in the 55.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.
