The rounded body puffers use the tail for navigation wore than swimming - they don't need the extra burst of speed in most hobby tank. Give them a tank 20-30x their length and you will see more cudal speed runs. Using the caudal for propulsion, those chubby but streamlined fish can really move. Fahakas and mbus create bow waves when they sprint - it makes a mess - water everywhere..

same with my dog face .. splashes water everywhere with his tail fin... when ...

1) I come with food.. he looks like an excited little puppy
2) when I put my hand in the tank to clean it - he will swim up and then swiftly swims down and flip water out of the tank towards me with his tail over and over...

very personable... definitely enjoy having him around hehe

There's nothing wrong with that, sometimes they only stretch it out, my mbu stretches his tail fin out all the time, since we've added a powerhead. We didn't have one before, and he rarely did it.

The only time Mine ever opened it was when he would turn or was "stretching." They use it more like a rudder then anything. Dont worry its normal.

Yes. It is routine for puffers with similar body configuration to use their pectorals and dorsal/anal fins for propulsion other than in sprints or for turning, and the caudal is used for the latter only when moving quickly. It is not pathology for it to be carried in its most streamlined position, which is closed.
