Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
So far so good on the snail tank. I feed them carrot and algae wafer for which they enjoy. I dropped in half a tum as I couldn't find any cuttle bone at the time. The tum made a mess and the water got cloudy. What do ramshorn eggs look like? I gave the tank a good cleaning today as it was discusting between all the poop and food residue. Boy, snails poop a lot. While cleaning the tank, I noticed a lot of clear slim on the sides as well as on the heater. I don't mean to sound gross but I looked like snot. What is this? Is it a type of algae? If so, it's discusting but if it's good for them, I'll leave it there next time. Maybe I'm too clean as I cannot leave the tank alone, I need to be cleaning it, too thoroughly obviously if there's no eggs yet. I also have a filter in there as well.

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
I'm guessing what you cleaned off were their eggs. They should be roundish and clear, but later you will see black dots in the clear goop, those are the baby snails. I don't wipe the glass in my tank just because there's so many eggs all over. Same thing for the heater and filter. They will lay eggs anywhere they can. So be careful if you want baby snails!

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
Thanks ppg. As I was cleaning the tank I noticed a tiny clear ball. I tried to leave it in the tank thinking it was an egg sac but I got too curious and not knowing exactly what it was, I squeezed it between my fingers. I'll know better from this point forward....don't squeeze the balls.
My concern was all the snotty goo over the place but if it's eggs then it will stay where it is. I'll just use a turkey baster to get the poop from the bottom and change the water, but not all of it like what I've been doing.

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
All of my tanks filters of some sort, no matter what is stocked. Even if it is just plant cutting grow-our, circulation is still needed. Snail tanks need more than fish tanks IME, and usually larger partials than fish tanks as well.

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
Hi RTR,
I have a filter in it as well as a heater. The filter has a lot of bubbles coming out so there's oxygenation and circulation. At least I hope so.

I can totally agree...I just started my snail tank...and I amazed at how much the poop! I am really shocked about it..RTR wrote:All of my tanks filters of some sort, no matter what is stocked. No kidding in the poop. I see more in the snail tank than in my cichlid tank. It's crazy.

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
My snail tank is a rather sadly undersized 2.5 gallon. With an aquaclear 30 on it.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

Wow Nick, that's quite the filtration you have there. AC's are awesome.

Re: Help needed with snail breeder tank
go get yourself a rosey red minow.
Yes, it will help create 'waste', that the algea will feed on and then, your snails.
it's the circle of life, and you'll see your snails will be healthier when they have that balance....
