How to Make Your Filter Run More Quietly??

Considering my two AC500's both squealed and rattled brand new out of the box, I doubt that was the problem with them.

My older ones were generally pretty quiet, but I really just hate any "background noise" and prefer cannister filters when I can use them.

Aqueon filters place the impeller unit at the top of the intake spout, actually in the tank - this makes them both self-priming and greatly reduces the noise they make. Overall, I'm not a big fan because they're not forced-throughput, but the in-tank impeller is actually a really good idea.

I thought that I was the only anti-tank-noise nut around. I am so glad to have all this very good company.

Have I mentioned that all of my tanks out in the house are dead silent? Surely I have said that before...

Tanks should be seen and not heard - exactly like Victorian era children, If you have to look at the current through the plants or touch the filter to tell if it is running, I am happy.

I do admit to some noise-makers in the fish room - W/D filters, aging vessels which splash a bit, and multiple Tetra-Billi filter air-driven clones. But there are hundreds of gallons of water, all working, in one small room, along with the water heater and a utility sink. And not an HOB or biowheel anywhere in the house.

The loudest things in our house are the de-humidifiers. I can't hear any thanks with those running. I can barely hear the TV.

Check your intake tube, it may not be seated properly.

De-humidifiers are loud. I probably would not hear much if anything with such on. The house unit is quiet, part of the HVAC, but there is a stand-alone in the garage and it is loud.

I'll take the noise over mold any day. I've gotten used to it.

I can't stand tank noise either. I have very sensititve hearing and any background noise drives me crazy and I can hear it all.

I have poor hearing - too many years in front of laminar flow hoods, fermentors, centrifuges, and other 'delicate' equipment - but the net result is similar - the white noise (Ha!) wipes out everything else.
