How did you cycle this tank? Do you have test kits for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? If not, please get them! What is your plan for upgrading this fish? It can't live in the 5g for long.

i have had the tank for about 6 months with two female betta in it. If i do twice a week water changes will the 5 gallon be ok? and how much on the water changes gallon wise should i change.

You need a larger tank for that puffer, period! I am shocked the puffer hasn't gone after the bettas yet. That tank is just large enough for them, only.

no the bettas are out its just the puffer by himself now

Well, that's good... at least this means the tank is cycled. BUT you still need to think about an upgrade ASAP!

ok but it will be awhile till i get a little bigger tank so seeing they produce alot of waste and it is a 5 gallon how often should i do water changes and what percent at a time. plus i have this stuff that takes out the chlorine and stuff what amount should i use when i put new water in?
example: it calls for 1/2 teaspoon for 5 gallons so if i replace 2 gallons should i put less in or the same amount or everyother time?

If you add the dechlor directly to the tank before you fill it, add enough for the entire 5g. If you dechlor in a bucket of fresh water, you can add for what you are replacing. I'd do 50% WC 2x/week for him. You need to start making that water brackish, too.

ok cool one more quick question do i let the tap water sit out for awhile or how do i know if its an ok temp. just by feel

If you are using dechlor , just make sure the water is the same temperature as the tank water.

well after all the questions and everything i took the f8 back to the pet store. i really liked him but wanted the best for him. so now i have 2 red and 2 green danios.
will my tank be good enough for that now

i know this is a puffer forum but do u know anything about danios? do they like a little current in the tank or not bc it seems like it might be a little to strong in the one corner. is there something i could do to make the current a little less. and i cant move the filter because it only goes in the hood one way

Danios love current, but some areas of the tank should have lower current.
