Got 2 more Otos for the bottom section and 2 more Dojo to keep the origional company Now only the Koi is alone! HAHA (evil little bugger)

Of the 2 gold fish ... there was a lot of butt sniffing going on, before and after the incident

Woke up this morning to find my prefilter clogged and about 100 gals of water in the brand new carpt. Fish all over the place. I gave my wife instructions before I headed off to work. She was laying down towels when she put one down, steped on it and found one of my new Dojo loaches under it!

Who knows how many hours it had been here, and after being crushed by a towel, it was still alive! She put it back in the tank but he looks all roughed up. Blood in the anal fin, whiskers are crushed and skin turning white. He is still alive (barely) and swims a little. I have Melafix arriving on Monday (ordered yesterday), but not sure if it will pull through

The layers of the pre-filter were:
Pot scrubbers
Floss
Sponge

I think the floss got clogged and that caused the flooding.
Should I be cleaning out the floss or just dispose of the old stuff? Should I be using floss at all?
I clean it every sunday, that why I was thinking it should be disposed of on a regular basis.

Still have lots of cleaning to do ... have to get that room temp up (tank is at 70 F now dropped 4 degrees in 7 hours) so that I won't crack any heaters when the water goes in..

Here is another pic .. between checking on the loach, swapping out soggy towels with dry ones and checking posts, I got my electrical at 99% I just have 1 more red led light to install.

This was taken tonight and the car strip lights are on the bottom and I have a red "spot light (4 led cluster)" on the top. It looks MUCH better in person than it does in the photo.

I toss floss when it starts getting clogged. Way to cheap to bother, when bought at sewing supply stores.

Re: filter media oreintation
ok ... I think I've got it.

The pre filter should be:
egg crate
pot scrubbers (most porus)
egg crate

The bottom filter should be:
Sponge (porus)
egg crate
floss (least porus)
egg crate
bio balls

That way if the sponge or floss gets clogged the over flow won't be on the floor!

Well .. after the flood, I had another accident with Mr. Dojo who got caught in the pre-filter (again) and was stuck there for over 9 hours.

Now I am fighting a battle on 2 fronts: 1) The Dojo got fin rot and 2) getting the water quality up there with daily water changes. So far the Nitrates are still too high but I am not getting a zero ammonia and am at the bottom of the sacle for Nitrites. After a Melafix / PimaFix full dose 24 hrs ago he is in considerably worse condition

The new meds don't arrive until Wednesday, so I hope it will survive until then. Also on Wednesday the shrimp arrive! Now if I am right, the shrimp can't be in the tank when the meds are dosed Sooo.. it looks like a cooler bucket for them for a while

man I couldn't imagine how my gf would flip if she found 100 gals of water on our floor. /props to you for still being alive hope to see some pics of this when its all set up and ready for you to kick back an enjoy it.

Stormy, Thank you! It was a very stressful event. And I can't wait for the day also. It is a lot harder than it looks to set up things correctly with this beast.

The chinese have arrived today (LGP will be happy)
Only 1 casualty in the bunch

I currently have them in the 5 gal snail tank until the 30 is ready which should be any day now.
There is supposed to be 200 of them but I doubt that.

I used Pimafix & Melafix on the big tanks, and find out today that I shouldn't have because it irritates the gills on the loach. Did a water change and dosed with Seachem's Paraguard.

The Chinese? I know they're small but you really shouldn't be shipping them around for your fish tank. Please tell me you're at least providing them with decent snorkels and goggles.

DANG!! 24 hours later the shrimp are gone... without a filter on that bowl the ammonia build up whiped them out

That was an expensive flush

I don't even have a filter on my shrimp/snail tank. I've got a bubbler but they don't even seem to like the current from that so I turn it off when I'm around. I did seed the tank with filter gunk though and it's fully cycled. No problems so far -knock on wood-.
