Has Anyone Ever Seen a Tetraodon cambodgiensis?

I was looking through my Aqualog book on Puffers today, and the list of puffers in the back of the book I see Tetraodon cambodgiensis, but when I went to the page listed for that puffer, the only puffer that is shown is the Tetraodon cochinchinensis (Fang's puffer). And to be even more confused, when I go to the PufferPedia and click on T cambodgiensis, it comes up with photos for T barbatus??!!

Can anyone enlighten me? Is there actually a T cambodgiensis? Or is it another puffer? I know that sometimes the names have been changed as more research is done, but I am very confused about this puffer. I know it says on the PufferPedia that this is rarely seen in the trade, but I'm just confused because there doesn't seem to be any definite information on this puffer. It appears to be a "target" puffer, and I know first-handed that they can be VERY difficult to identify.

Not much help but looks like a target group puffer to me Have you tried fishbase?

What's the betting that if I asked my lfs to get me a 'Fangs' puffer, I'd actually get an Abei?!

A puffer active in daylight was what I was after...

Well let me just tell you about some of my experiences -- I bought 2 "Fang's" puffers, and they both ended up being turgidus puffers. I bought a "turgidus" which turned out to be an Abei. And my friend thought he had a Fang's which I knew wasn't a Fang's but was an Abei.
So the chances of you getting something other than what you want, when dealing with the target group, are very good.

So far, from what I've read, some are saying that cambodiensis and barbatus are one and the same. I'm just curious because I'm getting conflicting information.

Well Mr Soggy, I know I've got an Abei, and Hymie (as I call him) is very active in daylight. He's quite a lovely puffer. Still available too.

I'm sure pufferpuggirl, is after another puff if she can find something (or given puffers character, I'd probably say somebody) interesting.

I keep looking to see if the single red eyed puffer is still stuck in the lfs - bare tank so the poor thing is hovering in the darkest top corner with tail folded round body. My wifes argument is: that's another tank. I might just have to put a divider in the partially stocked tetra tank and wait until she decides it's too ugly!

I just seem to like species tanks with a range of interesting fish! Or different water conditions. Trouble is that means many tanks!

Hi there,

I am (!) , I'm after that waif or stray red eye puffer in my lfs. AND pufferpuggirls, T. abei if she cannot find it someone good to look afer it before I am allowed to travel down...

I've just got permission from my wife to rescue the red eye. It (a she, I think) has been there in the lfs for a month or so.

I'll use a water butt to mix brackish water for the Celons, previuosly well used for Pacu tank wc's.

I'm nicking my Celons old 25g tank for this red eye

The poor thing is probably better off behind a tank divider in with the tetras or a week or so. Big lump of bogwood and a large potted amazon sword plant plus elodea...

That tank is mature in terms of filters. I'll steal some of that for this definatly fw and soft water puffer.

Food? Help!

BTW, I'm still after a 'target puffer' in addition to the red eye, pufferpuggirl - so no change on that front. If it's still there I will be very interested in your Abei puffer, when I can get there but if you can find a good home for it, please do.

Maybe we should both try for the 'fangs' and see what we are offered?!

My Celons are certainly my second favouite fish so far In 20 odd years...

When I asked the question, I merely wanted clarification because it was a bit confusing, but I'm going to be honest -- YES if I can find barbatus/cambodgiensis, then yes, I might get another puffer, but I do need to rehome Hymie first so I have a tank available. I find these target puffers very interesting, they are all so close, yet different species. I don't know how much luck I will have in finding these other target puffs, but I will, as always, keep a look out.

Corvus -- Thank you for the link, those photos were excellent. I've copied them to have as a reference, just in case I ever have a chance to get one. I must say, you are always courteous, helpful and very knowledgeable. Thanks again!

Mr Soggy -- That's cool that you're going to get the lonely redeye. I will always consider redeye puffers one of my favourites. I think they are pretty (especially the males) and interesting. I understand where you are coming from in regards to Hymie as well. I've got the advert running and if I find a suitable home for him, then I will rehome him, but I will not let him go to someone that hasn't any experience with puffers, and I will not post him, so I have a feeling I may have Hymie with me for a good few months. **PS - I've got redeyes if you need any info, or feeding ideas, so feel free to ask.

I understand they (red eyes) like soft water, a planted species tank with loads of hiding places (bogwood). Individuals vary in aggression. Fairly inactive during the day but hunters at night. I'm unsure what to feed, especially at first or if they can be kept in a group. Do they bury in sand? I couldn't really tell which sex this one was because it was so dark but I assume it's a female because I suspect the males would have been sold first.

The tetras will be moved so it can have the matured 80l tank minus one of the filters for the new thrown together tetra tank...

A female irrubesco should have broken lines on her white belly. Males have different markings and white belly. I have 5 irrubesco in my tank, along with a salivator redeye puffer, and they all get on fine, but I also have quite alot of plants in that tank. They actually hide in the plants, so I would say more plants than bogwood for hiding areas. I've also had as many as 14 in one tank, of course this tank is a 4-foot tank too. Sometimes you would not know I have them in my tank, as they all hide. When I cleared out my tank and sold all of my redeyes, before I got BeeBoo the Mbu, I took out all the bogwood and ornaments and thought I'd had gotten all the redeyes out, I mean you couldn't see any at all .... and after I had taken the others to their new home, I found out that I still had a male & female irrubesco, along with a salivator hiding in the tank! There wasn't any place to hide -- but they did!
I hadn't intended to get any more, but then a man contacted me and asked if I would take 6 that he didn't want, so I met him up at Ferrybridge and he gave them to me. One died, but they were VERY skinny. And the salivator that I had sold to a shop, the shop gave it to me back -- pretty good seeing how I made money off it and then they gave it back to me free!!

As to food items -- I mostly feed them pieces of prawn (cooked, they will not eat the raw, but yours might), and bloodworm(soaked in vitamins). They will bite at the earthworms, but not really sure they eat much of it. And of course, snails weekly.

I'll have to have a look at colours when it settles down - the bare tank must be stressful for it and it was very dark when I saw it on Sunday. I'll have to be careful transferring it and keep a very close eye for problems.

Are there any problems with smaller groups or male/female ratio, if I can find some more?

Last one, how are they with currents - powerheads etc?
