New Hairy Puffer!!! Help Needed

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

New Hairy Puffer!!! Help Needed

Hello all! I got a new hairy puffer in the mail today :D . So far she is swimming around happy and being fairly active. Right now she is 2 inches and is already showing a good amount of hair on her face. I am very happy that I chose this puffer. I have never seen such an amazing and beautiful fish.

Now the bad is that she has a tiny white hairy looking spot between her dorsal fin and body. I've heard from other members this could be a fungus. I noticed a little piece of this white spot is sticking up off the body and blows around in the current like a little hair.

Please help!!! I want to be precise about treating the problem and dont want to lose me new puffer :(

It is on the right side of the puffer. So that would be her right side.


Just watched the videos full screen and you can actually see the white spot pretty good in both videos. Watch it full screen for a better view.

You're right, a very beautiful & healthy specimen! I'd just add Melafix & Pimafix & keep the water pristine.

congrat on the new guy and I sure you will get everything fix up. Good luck with him.

I was wondering where did you order the little guy from. a hairy puffer is on the top of my short list of puffer i really would like to take care of

My goodness MachMe, you got a really beautiful Baileyi!! I don't even think mine is that pretty and I love mine alot, and besides, mine has almost no hairs on the face, so you've done very well, fantastic specimen of a Hairy puffer.
A few months back, my Baileyi got a fungus and it was quite bad at one point, but through using Melafix and Pimafix, it went away fairly quickly. The only thing I would add is that you might want to put an airstone in the tank if you don't already have one (sorry I wasn't paying attention to that when I watched the vid, was too busy staring at that very beautiful puffer you have there).
All in all, I'm sure you will get it sorted, and I think you are very lucky to have such a gorgeous puffer! Well done! :D

Thanks for all the nice comments!!! I'm very excited and she ate her first nightcrawler today.

Can I overdose the tank at all? On the bottles of pimafix and melafix it says 4 teaspoons per 10gallons. So I put 4 teaspoons of each liquid into the buckets of freshwater when I was doing a water change.

Is that too much?

Yes, you can & I have. Killed everything. I use the large pond-sized gallon bottle. Maybe it's more concentrated, because I use 1 drop/g.

So do you think I overdosed the tank? The brand is API. I used the recommended dose for pimafix and the recommended dose for melafix. 4 teaspoons of each = 8 teaspoons total. That is 1 teaspoon of each liquid per 10 gallons. Its a 40 gallon tank.

Maybe I should do a water change?

40g tanks never hold 40g of water. I'd do a 25% WC.

Ok. Do you recommend I dose the tank tomorrow as instructed on the bottle. Maybe cut the dose in half.

Ok so I might be being over critical but she is breathing very heavily and fast. Kinda opening her mouth between breaths. Is that normal?
