diodon nicthemerus

Post by 0pius »

Does anyone have any comments about this fish as I am wanting to get one of these as opposed to the common holocanthus.

Cheers in advance

i hate to break it to you but the pictures they show are of a standard holocanthus. the nicthermus is a very hard to find one which is home i the pacific off australia.

stick to either the literus or the holocanthus youll be happy with either.

NO one will sell a nicthermus for cheap, several hundred dollar maybe, but that is if you can get them caught outside the coral reefs in australia where they are protected by law.

if you want to know how to id the puffer, look at the spins and the pattern.

the holocanthus has its longest spines right between the eyes, the liturus has them at the top back fin near the tail.

I have a book about the fish from australia hence my request for info. It says that these are common around the bottom half of Austalia ie New South Wales to Southern Western Australia and commonly found around jettys and such, is this information wrong?

no, but to find one for sale is very hard. that area in which they swim is not easy for divers to catch them not to mention the shark issues down there.

you wont see a true nicthermus in the aquarium trade probably, and if you do hear of one, print out the fishbase.org photos of it, you will know if it is right or not.
