Snails...

Post by vhhicks »

I have a gsp who is about 1 1/2 inches. And he seems to absolutely despise snails. He won't eat them. He'll suck them up and spit them right back out and never glance their way again. But he will eat the heck out of flakes and freeze dried krill. I have fed him some raw shrimp and he likes that fine also. I'm just concerned about his beak. Does anyone have any suggestions on any possible substitutes that he might find more appealing??

How big are the snails that you are trying to feed him? They should only be the size of his eye. If they are too big, he wont be able to crush the snail shell with his beak causing him to loose interest.

Okay thanks everyone!! And yes the snails I tried were the size of his eye, that's why it baffled me. So with let's say a mussle.. How would I go about surving that to him and how big? Same question with crab legs..? Sorry I still new with these lil guys! :?

I squash the crabs legs I use between two large rocks. There still seems to be enough crunchy material in them for the puffers teeth as I can hear load crunching but they love it. I tried whole bits of crab leg to start and they wouldn't go near it.

Reminds me of an old Garfield cartoon when Jon says he has secretly hidden a brick in a cake. Garfield says he has secretly developed a taste for bricks

BTW I love the squeaky sound they make when eating something softer like squid - tearing rubber.
