I think that's a good decision to leave them for your sister to take care of.

I actually have 3 types of sand in the tank because I originally started out with this black aquarium sand that I got for free from my friend at an LFS, he had changed some tanks around and was going to throw it away, so he gave it to me instead. That's what I had when it was basically all water. Then I added some playsand that I got from Argos, but it's a bit heavy and stays damp a long time. However, the sand I got from B&Q is nice and light, like what you'd find at a nice beach. So as the crabs dig, they are digging up all 3 different levels. They have also dug up some of the smaller rocks that were down near the bottom.

And yes, I would think they would like being down near the warmth of the heat mat. I don't have anything like that on my tank, but I did turn up the heater, it's now set at 80F, whereas I had turned it down, but I think seeing as they are from Africa, they would prefer the warmer water -- and it also makes the air warmer too. :D

I am just a little bit bummed out, I've just seen that my big male crab has a busted big claw, and you can see the meat underneath. I suspected that he had hurt himself when I returned him back to the tank after I did the re-decorating. He fell out of the plastic container I had moved him in. I was hoping that nothing had happened, but I haven't seen him using that claw much, and now, tonight, I've actually seen the damage. I can only hope that he molts soon, because that's the only way he's going to get over that injury. Surely crabs must sustain worse injuries than that in the wild .... but I just hope that he can get over this. I would be very upset if he died, as he's one of the most interesting ones. The good news in all of this is that the tunnel that I mentioned in one of my other posts, has gotten deeper, and I think, if the male wants to molt, that's where he could go to do so. Then of course, I'd have to get the old shell out of there, but I will worry about that later. I just feel so sad right now because that break doesn't look good and I think if he were in the wild, an injury such as that could probably kill him, if nothing else, the fact that he probably would not be able to get food as easily. So I can only hope that he gets to molt. He's never done that since I've had him, so let's hope that's what happens soon. :(

As to the question you asked about my sand .... well the Argos playsand that I used is still very damp (but keep in mind that it's the sand that was under water, and didn't have a chance to dry properly, so I'm sure it's still holding alot of water), whereas the new sand that I got from B&Q is mostly dry sand. So a bit of both in there. Since they have dug that tunnel so deeply, and moved all that sand from the bottom now to the top, there's alot more moist sand on the top now. :?

sorry to hear!! Im sure they do get much worse injuries than that in the wild. ive seen videos of crabs that have lost their claws. i think its just like the legs, they manage without and can get them back to normal when they molt. However mikes leg didnt grown back at all when he molted. But all of my crabs legs are starting to grow back now!!!

i thought they had to molt under water?? Im sure i read that when they molt, they take in lots of water to make their body expand so that when the new shell hardens its bigger than the old one.but ive also seen videos of fiddler crabs molting on land, and they're quite similar.hope he's ok though!

Unbelievable ... I sat here last night and wrote a big long piece on molting, and today it's not here!!!

Okay, let's try again. :?

The information that I found on molting said that as crabs get older, they molt much less. And it also said that if a crab lost a leg, normally they can grow a new one back, but it takes 2-3 molts to get it to the same size as the others .... however, if the crab is older, it might not be able to grow back the limb. Maybe that was the case with your Mike. It also stressed that crabs must not be disturbed before, during and after they molt because they are likely to get serious injuries, again I thought of your Mike. You did say that you moved him to do a water change right after he had molted, and I wonder if he wasn't able to complete his molt and that's why his apron was hanging off slightly, and hence his death. I don't know, just throwing some things out there.

You were partially right, they do need to take in alot of water, because it helps them to expand, and allows them to get out of their old shell, but they do not NEED to be under water in order to molt. In fact, with land crabs, they prefer digging a tunnel, going down deep and molting there. It says that when they are in the darkness of their tunnel they secrete a hormone that causes them to molt. It said that a crab could be down in the tunnel for as long as 8 weeks, but not to bother them under any circumstances.

I also found out that if a crab loses enough appendages, or both it's claws, it can do an emergency molt, so that it's back to form, otherwise it can't defend itself or get away from any predators. All the information that I found on molting was really interesting, I didn't know the little suckers were so complex. It went on to say that before molting, a land crab will start digging, and will stop eating -- again it sounds alot like the behaviour my big guy has been showing. The article went on to say that if a crab can't go down into a tunnel, it will molt on the surface, but that it's very dangerous to do so because when the crab is molting it emits an odour that attracts other crabs, and as it's very soft after molting, it has no way of defending itself and that's when the other crabs can attack and eat it. So you should give you crabs plenty of sand to dig in. In fact, it said that you should take up any unnecessary items from the tank, so they have more space to dig in.

I got to thinking after reading all of that, and I am wondering if my big crab didn't hurt his claw on the big rock that I had in that tank. You can see it in the photos I posted, it's a big heavy rock (must weigh about 15 pounds!) -- the reason I say that is because they have dug underneath the rock, and it has fallen down a bit, and I wonder if it didn't fall onto his claw to crack it like that because he didn't fall that hard when I put them back into the tank. Anyway, I got up this morning and I removed the big rock and the piece of bogwood that was in there. My husband used to keep a snake, so I took the piece of bark-wood and placed it over the hole that leads down into the tunnels, that way it covers over the hole (not all the way obviously, they can still go in or out), keeps light from getting down there, and it looks nice too. I took the other piece of bark and laid it on an angle leaning against the glass, so one of the smaller crabs can go under it and have a bit of shelter. Since the big male is spending so much time down in his tunnel, the two smaller females have been spending more time over in the water part of the tank, on the turtle dock.

I really hope my big guy does molt, because I don't like the look of the injury to his claw, and I would hate to think of him dying, that would really suck because I don't think the LFS that I got them from has them anymore. Oh, I also read that as these RLC's get older, they get less tolerant of each other. In fact, the article I read said that they will kill each other, even if they are male to female. It said that when they are juvenile, they are very accepting of one another, but as they get older they will get more dominant and will kill off any other tankmates. That kind of bummed me out because I am not able to keep more than one tank for them right now. So I hope they don't mature too quickly. It also went on to say that as they get older, they don't need as much water, and the person that wrote the article said he went from having a part land, part water set-up to having a terrarium with just a water bowl. Again, seeing as I've just converted my tank into a part land, part water tank .... I hope they don't changeover too quickly!

So all in all it was very interesting reading about crabs and molting. Funny how something so small can be so interesting and we can learn so much from them.

And it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. When I took the big rock out of the tank this morning, I looked down and they have really done a job with the tunnels, it doesn't just go down, it goes across the tank as well. Makes me wish I had a bigger tank for them to do many tunnels in, but I suppose mine are lucky when I think of all those that are kept solely in an aquarium set up with no land at all, and no possible way for them to dig a tunnel -- which makes me feel very sad.

Anyway, I will post anything different that happens or any news that I find out. :D

wow, thats alot of amazing info, thanks alot for sharing!!! Really helps me seing as im going out today to buy some stuff for the tank and going to change it over today to sand!!
I'll make ure they have a nice deep part of the sand. Also, i've notice rainbow digging like crazy, everywhere. And it's rainbows leg that is already growing back, its almost a centemetre long now. Just a brown stub. So maybe i'll be seing a molt soon. Hope your big guy is ok, and everything you said there just reminds me of mike and gary. gary was definitely older, and alot less tollerent of mike. Which also makes me think he may have died of old age, which means i didnt do anything wrong with him.

Hope your big guys ok, i'm sure he will be, as you've already had one crab molt and the others didnt attack it.

Also, i think if my crab didnt come out of its tunnel for 8 weeks, i'd be rather tempted to check on it haha.

cheers, let me know how everything turns out. I'll take picutre later and put them up asap

Did the tank tonight!! I looks amazing! As soon as i put them in they started digging. Ive bought some plants for the water that look nice, gives it a bit more colour, and a big rock/cliff that looks great with the sand, and give a lot of hiding place for them.
i left the cable i use to connect my phone to my pc at uni so wont be able to upload photos until i go back, unless i can find a spare.

I took my sister to look at turtles today and she ended up buying two red claw crabs. We bought the tank and she used my old gravel and its actually tuened into a really good set up. I remember you sayin something about having red claws. Is there anything we should know? Any differences to rainbow crabs? I think they're really cool, and one of them is really comfortable and not scared so thats cool.

Hey, that's great to hear about you doing up your tank. And I completely understand about not having the cable, so don't worry about uploading photos right now. Also nice to hear that they are digging right away, that's a good sign. You will have tunnels very soon I think.

I was looking at my guy just a few minutes ago .... and it looks as if his eye is bent. You know how they look like little match sticks with the eye on top? Well his "stick" is bent over, and I don't think it's supposed to be like that, so seeing that is making me think more and more that he had some sort of accident involving that huge rock that I took out. And now I feel really badly for having put something so big and heavy in the tank in the first place! I just hope he recovers and doesn't die from his injuries. He seems to be using his big claw to some extent, but you can tell there's something wrong with it just by the way he holds it, it doesn't look right.

Anyway ....

Great to hear that your sister went with Red-Claw crabs instead of turtles (no offense against turtles, but I think crabs are more interesting personally). Yes I have a couple of the Red-Claw crabs, and some other crabs too. I have my one Red-Claw in with my Cutcutia puffer (I hadn't intended on them being together, but when I had the 2 Cutcutia together, the one was attacking the other very badly, so I had to move him out). Actually the puffer hasn't bothered the crabs at all, and they do come very close to it. Just recently I got 2 Thai red crabs and put them in the same tank as the Cutcutia and Red-Claw.
If I had one piece of advice, I would tell your sister to make sure they have a place where they can leave the water to get air, even if it's just some rocks sticking up, or a piece of bogwood out of the water. Otherwise, they are pretty easy to take care of with no special needs.

I have two other crabs too. One is in my MBU tank, and one is in my big Cube tank, and even though they are in the water 24/7, they are still alive and kicking. One of them was meant to be puffer food, but the puffers ignore it and so it's living in the tank now. Actually it's pretty cool to watch. It comes out and gets food, it will move the little pebbles, one by one, out of the way to see if there's food underneath. I love watching them.

yeh i helped her set the tank up, even let her use my big rock haha. theres plenty of out of water space, and they seem to be doing just fine. Shes gone to get bloodworms today, so my crabs will be having something added to their diet lol.

how often do you feed you crabs? both the rainbows and the red claws?
i dont really have set days or anything, i just feed them lol. i think maybe it would be better for them if i had more of a feeding routine for them. so i know im not over feeding.

I make sure they always have fresh food. Sometimes I put some veggies in there and will leave them for a day or two, then take them out and replace with new. But I always give them a few pellets, so they have something and I like to give them variety as well. So I feed them many different things.

And because my red-claws are in with my Cutcutia puffer, they eat whatever the puffer doesn't, plus I do add a little bit extra for the crabs too. Thing is, that means I have to clean that tank more regularly than I would if it were just a puffer in there.

bought some biggish pebbles for the water today. They look nice and it's probably a nicer texture for them to walk on.

I was sat watching tv before and each of the crabs were hiding in their own place all quite far apart. then as if there was some alarm clock in the tank or something they all started exploring and climbing at the same time. Its so facinating to watch them, and i can get up close to the tank and they aren't scared. Really do think they are happy now. And since i put the sand in, they spend so much time out of the water and only go in for short periods of time, which is what i thought they would prefer to do but they've only just started doing it. Its great.

I'm glad that your crabs are happy, that's great. :)

I think something bad is going to happen to my big male soon. His apron is open a bit, and his eye is like broken, he must have had a bigger accident than I had originally thought because he is not in very good shape. He is still moving around. I wish he would molt, that might fix things .... but he's still moving about, so I guess there's still a chance that he might recover. However, after you telling me about your guy, when his apron came loose, it makes me wonder about my guy. :(

Im sorry to hear that! Keep an eye on him, hopefully its just an injury and he'll be ok.Let me know how he does.
One of mine has dug a little tunnel, very shallow but its right against the glass so i can see it, its really cool.
