Jungle Fizz Tabs -- How Much to Use?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Jungle Fizz Tabs -- How Much to Use?

Post by pufferpuggirl »

Okay, I've finally got the Jungle tabs, they arrived today from America, didn't expect them to get here so quickly.

I want to take some of this and soak BeeBoo's food in it, but I don't want to use too much. Does anyone have any idea how much I should try using for a MBU puffer that's about 4-5 inches long? I am going to try injecting it into a piece of shrimp and see if he eats it. If he does, then great, but if he doesn't, then I will try soaking earthworms in it, but I just don't want to use too much since I'm not dosing the entire tank as it says to do on the box.

So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. :D

But she doesn't want to treat the tank, just the food. So essentially BeeBoo will be getting a more concentrated version of the medicine... Which is why she wants to know how much to put in the food she's soaking.

Thank you ittybittyfishy, you are correct. I do not want to treat the tank, as that would kill my snails and my aquatic crab. I know I've read that other people have used them to treat just the food, but I don't want to overdose BeeBoo, nor do I want to give him so little that it won't do any good.
So hoping someone can give me an idea of how much to use. :)

Hmmmm...

When I medicated my fish food, I would cut the tab into 4 equal pieces and use one of those pieces to soak my fish food in. I used about half a cup of water in a small Styrofoam cup because I wanted the food to be fairly concentrated. My fish didn't have any issues eating with this moment of medication.

Thanks Jivenjune, I went ahead last night and put about 1/4 of the tab into some water, but not as much as what you mentioned .... but that did quite a few pieces of shrimp. I'm not sure BeeBoo got enough into his system, and I may have to medicate his food again, but I didn't want to give him too much at once.
At least he's back to eating regularly now, so that's a definite improvement. I just wish his colouring would get brighter, as he's still a bit dull. :D

Hi Pufferpuggirl,

If you let me know how much active ingredient is in each tablet we can work it out it so you know how much to dose Beeboo. You should need to know how much he weighs.

With my puffers, I took the 7.47g og praziquantel per hundred ml of the med solution (written on the box) and the dose per pound of fish from the library, an estimate of what my puffer weighed and calculated how much I'd need. I think it was 23mg per pound of fish for the praziquantel. The ammount I used was tiny - 0.05ml of the med injected into a piece of shrimp. Those 1ml syringes are useful :)

I just looked up jungle labs parasite clear and it seems to have both metronidazole and praziquantel, which is great - just didn't say how much!

Just looked at the library, seems to suggest using 100mg of a tablet, but I'm unsure of product or concentration.

Well I've just looked on my box of Jungle Parasite Clear tabs .... and they do not provide an exact amount of ingredients, but I've just noticed that there's another ingredient that I think works on parasites -- diflubenzuron. I'm not sure what that is exactly, but it sounds alot like flubendazole, so I'm wondering if it's not a derivative. I have no idea what the other ingredient (acriflavine) is. But I've emailed the company that makes these fizz tabs asking if they can give me a more accurate amount of how much of each ingredient is in each tab.

I went ahead and gave BeeBoo some last night, just a guesstimation ... but he's doing alright, so at least I've not over-dosed him.
I think I will try again tonight when I feed him, just to be sure he's getting enough medication into his system. :)

Great news, Beeboo has more appetite :D

Yes, I was wondering how much of the meds were really getting into my two. They tend to rip up the shrimp when eating it, so the solution might have escaped into the water.

Probably soaking food that will absorb it like freeze dried shrimp might actually be better? Someone, suggested that to me and I hadn't thought of it :)

Still the apetite of both has improved, I've seen no more white stringy poo, so I presume that's the other way you can do it - have they improved? You know you are probably in the right ball park with the dose :)

I'm just pedantic by training, I want to know exactly how much meds I've added

They might look better still with each in a much larger tank. That's one thing I can improve for them :)

Yes, I'm very happy that BeeBoo is back to eating good again, he's really loving the earthworms, as are most of my puffers.
I've not noticed any white stringy poo recently, but haven't seen any poo to be honest, so not sure what's going to happen. I have read that even though the parasites might be dead inside the puffer, it can take up to 7 days before you would notice a real change in your puffer. That's just a rough guess though I'm thinking. The only thing I'd like to see change on BeeBoo is his colouring, that's the only thing that I'm not happy with. I know he could be more brightly coloured. Lisa's MBU, Kaleeko, has beautiful colouring, very vivid, and that's how I hope BeeBoo would turn out. I went back and looked at some photos of BeeBoo when I first got him and his colouring has never been vivid, so I'm thinking the poor thing has probably been battling IP's for a long time. Let's hope I can finally stop it and get him back to being a healthy and happy MBU.

In regards to my Ceylons ..... it's really nice that they've accepted Baby Blip as well as they have. They look like a little family with the two big ones and then tiny little Blip swimming around. I wish I had a bigger tank because I'd love to have more of those small ones, they are just too cute! I gave Blip some of the treated shrimp too, hoping that it will help him as well. :D
