raising ph and converting to brackish
I have a 20 gallon tank that has been running for about 3 months and is cycled. My last figure eight died in the other tank that i had so i really want to be prepared for my new fish! The ph is at 7 so I would like to know how to raise it safely. Also, it is freshwater right now so i would like to convert it to brackish before i purchase my new fish. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi puffer87. Don't change to BW until you know that the fish you are getting is currently in BW. Alot of BW puffers in lfs are in FW. Source your fish from a reputable place & find out their water parameters. In my experience pH doesn't seem to be that important to your average hobby fish keeper. (someone will correct me if I'm wrong tho!)

Trying to raise or lower your PH can do more damage than simply leaving it alone...you can start converting your FW to BW just make sure you slowly get your fish used to the higher SG when you get them...using drip accumulation. Here is a good thread to help you get started.(viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19348)..just make sure you dont raise your SG more than .002 a week..it could crash your tank...

I would like to get a figure eight puffer. I am going to buy him from a store called absolutely fish and i know that they keep them in brackish water.

Just bring your hydrometer over there & test the SG, so you know what to cycle your tank at. There is an article on F8s in our Library.
