Leak test is good. I found a small leak in the over flow pipe, and possibly another one at the base of the overflow pipe but it is a very quick fix.

The powerhead works well. I have made a quick video (boy is my voice nasal), outlining the basics of the tank. I am still al little confused as to the prefilter, the filter and the refrigerium areas.

Take a look at the vid and let me know what you think.

Good video. I have a much clearer idea of the setup now, but I'll have to watch a couple of times more before i can offer suggestions.

I am not surprised at the large dead areas. double baffles are more common, so that the flow through the downstream area is at least diagonal (from the uptream baffle base up to the downstream overflow to the next unit) rather than flat across the surface, but they still have issues.

There seems to be a pretty small space for media in the main filter. Secondary filters must have been intended for the other areas, and they would also have provided for more current/mixing throughout the individual sections.

Ok .. we're approaching budget now .. I ordered the substrate ($400) and the plants ($200). I only ordered enough substrate for a 50-50 mix with the pool filter sand that I currently have. I have also ordered a surface skimmer for the lower tank($200) ...

This is turning out to be an expensive month! I am hoping the substrate will kick in the growth of the pants so I can eventually divide them naturally and continue to re-populate the tank (it is going to look pretty spartain at first). Later I can add liquid fertalizer as needed. The local LFS can't get the substrate before new year, and maybe spring so I had to spend an extra $100 on shipping costs.

Maybe my brother in law is correct.. I need a head check!

I'm still not 100% happy with the video.. I'm debating on taking another. I added frozen shrimp to the mix last night and when I came back from work today I found a foamy froth.. At least I know the shrimp are working. Next I'll add some filter media from the 30 gal to help with they cycling.

Poli and I were chatting online the other day when he mentioned that he was changing his set up.

This caused a little light in my head to turn on. I have a truckload of black granite sitting in my yard that I was going to use for the pond. So I dug my way through the snow and tried to pick some of the smaller peices. Dang these things are heavy!
As a result I now have a bathtub full of rocks, and probably, one cheezed off groundhog (for messing up his home). I am not certain I can cut / trim these though.

Do I need to treat these in any way bofore I place them in the tank? They have been sitting outside for several years. I also have some crushed quartz that I was going to put in the tank, but these peices are super sharp. It is almost like slivers of glass. Some of the larger chunks may be ok.

Anyone want to buy some black granite flecked with gold?? haha It's a long drive!

J-P if you like you can boil rocks for an hour or so, I just used tap warm water and a brush.
