Bleaching new tank?
So I just picked up a used 40 gallon tank off of craigslist. He used the tank for GSP's! The guy gave me all sorts of accesories like fake plants, river stone, heater, filter, lights etc.
He tolde me to bleach the tank... My question is do I bleach the tank and all the non electrical accesories to ensure there is no foregin bacteria? Or will a simple water rinse and some vinegar do the job?
How have you prepared a used tank?
Thanks

Re: Bleaching new tank?
Hey, welcome to the forum!!! Here's what I did: take empty tank, pour straight up bleach
in it, fill it half with water, scrubbed it up, then let it sit for like
15 minutes to half hour and rinse it out VERY well. Rinse it twice to make sure you got everything out. Then dry it completely! If you have to rinse it 3 x to make sure then do that!

Re: Bleaching new tank?
Tip: It will be much safer to do this process with Oxyclean instead of bleach. Oxyclean breaks down into totally non-toxic oxygen & hydrogen & only needs minimal rinsing but totally cleans the tank & supplies. Run the filter on the edge of the tank to clean that too, while Oxyclean is in there.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

not that it may be an issue in this case, but i wonder if Oxyclean has disinfectant properties?

It breaks down the bacteria, like it does the rest of the organic matter.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Yeah, I do agree as well. Oxyclean is the safest way to clean the tank.
