Fahaka puffer ... did i get lucky ... ??

Post by newbiepuff »

Hi people,

Is this odd for a fahaka puffer ...

Had her since 1 inch long and now 7 inches ex tail ... so over a inch of growth everymonth
and we feed it mussles, shrimp with shell, clams, snails etc

Whats wierd is ... she hasnt touched any of her tankm8s from neons, tigerbarbs, sharks, catfish,
cichlids and some more ... another thing is i been breeding crays for her but she doesnt seem
to care for them ... i drop them in right next to her and the wee cray even walks right next to it
and nothing!

I think there is 3 live blue crays in the 125 tank atm .. living peacefully lool

Whats even more wierd is when she was 2-3 inches she was in the 35g crayfish breeding tank
and she was eating the live crays everyday .. always hunting etc

ohh ... is this normal??

She doesnt move from her cave all day all week ... sleeps there everynight
and i never see it swim ... are fahakas usually like this cause the research i did before hand
suggested they were extremely aggresive ... this fahaka is exact oppistite and she looks
perfectly healthy , good colour, strong marrow stripes and nice round belly and always
seems to have a smile on her face :)

were in same situation here. I got mine more active bye removing some tank mates. left the cichlids and plecos. seems soon as others were gone she became more curious and a lot more active.
again I am biased to females being tank mate friendly. only time will tell.

My fellow lives with clown loaches and he doesn't bother them at all....yet *fingers crossed*. Always keep your eye for aggression with Fahakas becuase you really just never know. For the activity levels, it might be that you are overfeeding. They tend to get lazy. Or maybe one of her tankmates is bothering her... I had a synodontis cat that liked to pick on the puffer. Got rid of him and Ratchet spends a lot more time swimming around his tank.

Darkstorm how are you able to know the gender of your fahaka? As far as I know it's not possible. Wouldn't mind being proven wrong though :D

I got 3 when they were young and the female showed abdominal fullness. from an inch. wich I was told only females do at juve stage.
but since then she has laid eggs, well it look'd like eggs shaped like a football but clear. next time she drops some ill try an save . or least get a picture

edit i cant type lol. i did notice if i remove the black background an she can see reflection she tries to spawn so maby thats the trick.
hrmm spawn eggs put em in Palembang tank = hybrids?

My fahaka also allows tank mates but does nip a fin occasionally. He tears crays apart though.

What are you feeding, how often?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

I'd say that you got extremely lucky, but it might only be a matter of time. Keep in mind that a fahaka that size can rip most smaller fish to shreds in a matter of seconds, so I would avoid putting anything expensive in there :?

Oh that makes sense. I forgot about the whole egg thing lol. I think there's been quite a few people here whose Fahaka has laid eggs.
