Calcium for snails

Post by growitnow »

Hello,

I have a snail farm of Red Ramshorns, but their shells are often very soft and sometimes disintegrate when touched. Very soft water. I would like to add Calcium drops to the water. I also have tried cuttlebone (for birds) in tank, but do not have capacity to add aragonite to filter or substrate. Can you please advise.

What specific Calcium product (mfg/product name), and how many drops on what schedule would you recommend? The calcium supplements I see are for reef tanks so can't figure out dosing.

Snails for GSP.

Thanks,

We had a discussion about this a little while back. Check out this thread, and see if that helps you any.

If not, then maybe someone else knows. Good luck.

Just to add quickly .... I used to buy a liquid calcium supplement off eBay, but it can be expensive and it's not a very big bottle. Then I decided to try the cuttlebone approach because my water is not enough for the snail's shells to stay hard. I had that problem when I had some apple snails, they looked like chipping fingernails, but that was before I started putting a supplement in my water. I also have a cuttlebone in my Rainbow crab's tank too, as they need it for their shells. :)
