puffer help....

Okay...I love my puffer and have been struggling to make room for a new BIG tank! I live in a two story home so you would think finding room would not be that hard! As of right now there is no where to put a 3rd big tank!

As some of you may remember I have a 54 corner seahorse tank and a 110 reef....And then acquired a Dog Faced Puffer who is still about 2 inches big at this point. So I know he needs a bigger tank and buying one isn't a big deal...putting it somewhere is!

SO....I wanted to ask my wise puffer friends what is the possibility of him going into our 110 reef? I have a feeling you will all yell NO, but I have to ask to be able to move on to new ideas!

The 110 has about 180+ lbs of live rock is filtered by a sock filter (Bag, or whatever you like to call it)...has about 120 lbs live sand, has been established for almost 2 years now. Coral beauty, flame angel, dotty back, 6 line, clown fish, as well as 2 cleaner shrimp, 3 peps, 2 coral banded, sea cucumber, odd number of Astra's/vibex/turbo, linkia, as far as corals...2 Acan, large bubble, assortment or shrooms/polyps/etc, few small leathers, quite a few others items that escape my mind right now.

SO...what are the chances?

I have been looking at tanks and trying to see what my options are. Can I go with a tall tank? Currently the only place I have to put the tank is the entry...but I worry about the amount of natural light and how that will affect the tank. Today we will be looking at tanks AGAIN.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

I think putting him in there is a BAD idea. Tall tanks are bad because you need as much surface area as possible for O2 exchange. I've got my 90gal in the dining room. Have you thought of any uncommon places? Hallway, kitchen, bathroom, end against wall for a room divider, etcc..

We have one in the dinning room, and the corner tank is in our bed room.

in our living room our big screen/entertainment center takes up one wall and we have two full couches that take up opposing walls and the living room is open to the kitchen which has all walls spoken for.

Our den is our computer room and is where I had figured it to go. But then we put wood floors in, bought new couches, and moved one couch to the den, now between a couch two bookcases, fireplace and a desk we ran out of room there for a big tank.

Upstairs other then our room is unsafe as we have two boys 7 and 1 1/2! So their bedrooms, and their play room is out of the question! As I do not 150 gallons of water flowing down the stairs after they have an "accident"

The entry is a good spot...but it gets A LOT of natural light as the door is there and a huge 6x5 arched window as well! Natural light is a big question as I have heard natural light causes algae to grow? Hubby also says he is not sure about it going there even if we figured a way to cut the light down.

And where ever it goes Well be fairly permanent as I don't think we will be moving it unless we actually move out!

If I cannot fit a tank in our home and I cannot put him in our 110 (which Hubby noted today NO WAY!...LOL) I am going to have to find him a home!

And I really do not want to do that!!!

Do you have a finished basement or area with flooring that's easy to clean up? I glued down solid vinyl tile (not laminate) to the concrete basement floor - easy to clean up after water changes.

I live in Florida

We do have a garage that we are turning into a game room (pool table, poker table, projector, etc.) But again we live in Florida and am not sure of the conditions that we will be able to maintain in there...

Is your concern the heat & AC of the room? I'm guessing that your house has all hardwood floors with some carpeted areas or tile? I like the stability of a concrete floor - like the garage for a larger tank. Are you too far along in your garage conversion to plan for a tank ? Of course, those pool cues could be a problem!

If the tank is to be in a very warm area, a chiller may be neccessary. Personally, I loke the entry way idea. Sure, sun can cause algae, but with a good skimmer, light bio load and water changes, I think you'll be just fine. You might even luck out and have a timid dog faced that will allow an algae cleaning crew.

I think there are some window coatings that might cut down on light - don't know which wavelengths they filter, but some are about invisible to the naked eye.

I've seen some entries that really would look great with a tank - depends on the layout. I worry about traffic - do the kids go in/out through a different door ?

Hubby says he doesn't like the entry idea

, my only concern is the natural light, I do have a blind on the arched window, and we plan on getting it tinted as well in the future. I think it could work as there will only be about 3 fish in there....

You guys are giving me good ideas, and I do want to figure out something...When I get a chance I will get a few pictures so you can have a better idea....

mmm no window tanks or in entry ways. the algae issue becomes a nightmare. specially in SW its just not worth your horror to put it there tinting or not.

OK, I've got the solution - an addition that is a dedicated aquarium room (filed under "things I want when I hit Lotto") with lots of convenient elec & plumbing. Really, its a tough call. Selfishly speaking, I would ditch the pool table, but on the other hand, I think that game room & pool table will be great when your boys become teenagers & have friends over - you'll feel much better knowing where they are.

You said your living room was open to the kitchen.. could you consider a long tank and set it up as a room divider? Maybe figure out some way, like a cabinet at each end, to hold the filtration at the ends instead of in the back like is typically set up, so it can be viewed from both sides, the kitchen and living room?

Too bad your corner tank wasn't the larger corner size, you could have put the two together to make a half circle.
