Porcupine - Temperature tolerance

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Porcupine - Temperature tolerance

Post by j_wishbone »

HI guys

just wodering if anyone know the the maximum tolerance of a porcupine puffer

hit 40 degrees celcius here yesterday

and found my porc laying on the ground looking pale with no movement... and have realised that it has died...

looked at the temp and it was around 30-32 degrees...

would that have been enough to finish off my favourite little pal?

no signs of any weird behaviours prior to his death.. feeding well and very active

didnt bother checking water chemistry as I think i got to the tank too late based on the funky smell coming from it... so chemistry would have been crazy already.. no tankmates... just the bacterias living in the live rock :)

I didnt find him until late at night... during feeding time

really really bombed...

1 hard lesson to learn??? :( :( :(

86-89.6? Those are actually not so bad. They're both used for different ich treatment methods. It might have been the lack of oxygen that killed him. Warm water holds less oxygen, so when used medicinally, extra aeration is always crucial.

If the tank got to 40 Celsius (104 for us Americans), that might have been enough to kill him outright...

Is your heater still working? If it blew, it would have put out a TON of heat, which could have come back down by the time you got there.

I'm very sorry. Poor thing. :(

Without knowing the parameters before he died, it will be difficult to figure out but answer all the other Qs above in red.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

yes understood pufferpunk....

1) Your water parameters - pH?, Ammonia?, Nitrite?, Nitrates? and salinity (1.023)

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants.
200 Litres
x1 Porcupine (15cm)
0 tankmates
just live rock

3) Feeding (1 medium prawn 5 days out 7), water change schedule (20% once a month)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

nothing. just cleaned the algae off the glass.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it?
more than 12 months. live rock in water.. put prawn in for a month or 2.. and then a few fishes came and went...

Can you check the nitrates?

Sounds like the right amount of rock. You really should use a skimmer & powerheads to flow the water around the rock. Otherwise, just like FW, you'd ned to do close to 50% weelky WC on there. I don't think that filtration was adequate for 20%/month.
