When do I need to move 2" GSP to bigger tank?
When do I need to move 2" GSP to bigger tank?
I just adopted a 2" GSP from a friend after the beautiful little creature devoured most of the fish, anemones, and invertebrates in his 300 gallon marine tank. The GSP lived in my friends marine tank for 1 year before getting booted out, and I just put him in my small 24 gallon saltwater tank two days ago. The new 24 gallon tank has lots of live rock, one damsel, and is well cycled. I had planned on setting up this small 24 g tank as a reef tank--which, of course, is not going to happen now that I have this adorable little fin nipper in it. I have another 90 gallon saltwater tank in storage, but it is expensive to run and set up, so I want to wait as long as possible before I move the GSP to the bigger tank.
My questions is, how big can the GSP get in this 24 gallon tank before I need to move him into my bigger tank?
Will one GPS be OK in a 24 gallon tank long term?
If I move the GPS to the bigger 90 gallon saltwater tank, what other tank mates to you recommend?

Re: When do I need to move 2" GSP to bigger tank?
They get to be about 6 inches--the minimum tank size for an adult GSP is 30 gallons; they're also prone to growing extremely slowly, so you have a bit of time before he or she is in dire need of a larger tank. I believe that there are a few bad tasting corals that you can keep with a GSP. I think they are mushrooms, leathers and possibly xenias.

Mine grew from 2-4" within 2 years. I'd definitely begin looking for a larger tank at 3". Maybe a 55g?

Thanks! It sounds like I have some time then. Honestly, this little fish is so adorable! Such a cute personality along with those deadly chompers. It is too bad that the pet stores sell them with such mis-information. I have learned a lot from this forum--thanks!

Welcome!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

On a related note:
How long can you keep one GSP in a 5.5 before having to upgrade to say, a 55?
If I buy a baby (1-2") How much time would I have to setup a larger tank before his health is effected (stunted growth)

Personally, I would not even consider putting a GSP in such a small aquarium ... you did mean 5.5 gallons, correct? Way too small if that's what you meant.

Most puffers require a 15 + gallon tank...maybe you can check around on craigslist and find you a bigger tank so that you have more options???

I love this kind of tank! Perfect for seahorses! (*wink*) The cherry stand is gorgeous, but IDK if it's included?

looks like some good deals ^^^
Worried about how much extra it would cost to buy heaters/lighting/all the other stuffs for the ones with that not included. Strip lights are expensive
If I do anything larger than 30 gallons I will probably go marine.
