Making your own syphon?

I bought a Marina Aquavac for 60 bucks at PetsUnlimited. It fills and cleans the tank for you, and has a 25ft hose attatched to it so it can reach your tap. It works really well!

Of course it isn't really necessary for any tank under 50g...

I have a syphon that I purchased at the LFS but if I really needed one and didn't have any moola i would.........


Take a garden hose/or any type of hose with a decent sized girth..Cut it so that it's about 4-5 ft long
find a funnel (for either automotive or cooking as long as it isn't coverd in oil, a unused one would be best) Cram it (skinny part first) into the buisness end of the hose and secure with electrical tape and wal-laa cheap or free emergency syphon!

Please note that this just popped into my head and I've never tested it...

Oh, by the way, IME electrical tape adhesive comes off easily, so it might not be ideal for underwater use.

Good point...i'm thinking that if the hose was a little smaller than the end of the funnel it would stay put..It all works out in my head but it could end up being a mess...

I had trouble with my first manual one too, usually I just dip the large end in and let the water go down and dip and let it go down if it flows nicely you should see that it's working. But Python brand has it really easy (but expensive) you just hook it to your faucet and turn the faucet on the and the water will go down the drain and fill it back up by closing the valve.No bucket, no spills

my bf and i went out and bought one that you connect to the sink faucet and turn on the water and it creates the suction for you... its a pretty nifty device!

You suck it to start! Being careful not to get TOO much yucky water in your mouth! Unless you have the sort with the pump?

That's just wrong, on so many levels!! Get the entire hose into the water.. a little slowly, get the air bubbles out, stick you thumb in it while it is under water and enpty the thumb end into the bucket. If you did it right it should just drain... if not it will stop because of the air pocket. It takes practice but it sure beats blowinf the water

OR get / make a python ... your friends and family will mock you for sucking in a blow fish tank

Yah. Everytime I do a water change my dad's like "I can't believe your doing that. What if you got some in you mouth? And aren't puffers poisonous?" I've never swallowed any. Yet.

That's cool! I've seen a video on that, but I still don't get it. Next time I do a water change I'll try it. (and bring extra towels)

I often use a length of 1/2 inch hose, maybe five foot long. To avoid mouth stuff, I take it to the tap and fill the hose with water then put a thumb over each end. One hand goes in the tank, the other over bucket or barrel.

Took me 20 yrs to work that out!

I've made gravel cleaners before by taking a pop bottle with the end cut off and jamming a hose in the top then sealing with tape. Not ideal because of the glue on the tape.

Pythons really are useful...

To move lots of water, I use one inch diameter pond hose started by a pond pump, works both ways and - it shifts serious water like my 240l done in 15 mins
