A Visitor Lurking In My Tank....

Post by bigfatfish »

Two weeks ago I went to the beach to collect snails to use as food for my GSPs (I freeze loads at a time). Whilst I was there I also managed to catch a little shrimp thing which I thought they would love to munch on. However, it was so tiny that when I dropped it in, they didn't see it! I assumed it would die pretty quickly, be eaten or sucked into the filter. I have done two water changes since then, hoovered the gravel twice, taken out the plants/decs to wipe off the algae. When I fed them earlier, who should come racing out for a feed? Little shrimpy guy! I couldn't believe that he had survived & was a couple of mm bigger! This is still only a low end BW tank, so I thought that the salinity difference would have finished him off long ago. How hardy must these little creatures be? I am truly amazed that he is still in there & now I don't want him to get eaten!! Think I might go to the beach again to see if I can catch him some friends!

I just recently saw a ghost shrimp in my tank that i'm pretty sure i put in months ago as food for my puffer. i started using frozen foods because its easier while i'm in college. I guess my puffer never got to it and has been living down there ever since. i never saw it come out at all until one day i saw it standing proudly at the top of my driftwood, and i was like where the heck did you come from?!?! haha your story made me think of that.

When I went to move Frankie from his 29g to his new 65g, I found *all* the ghost shrimp I'd "fed" him...they are all still living with him (and some Endlers) in the 65g!

It was more that he had been plucked from a rock pool & into a low BW tank that amazed me. They must be able to tolerate a huge range of SG, but I suppose there would be variations naturally in the pools as tide comes in/out & with evaporation of smaller pools.

I believe you have small mud puddles mixed up with acres of rice paddies.

Same thing happened, but with OTO in my FW, he was MIA for about 4 weeks when I found him. Since then I call him RAMBO.
