Figure eight housing ideas

Post by kafkabeetle »

Hi folks! I'm new to this forum so forgive me if this isn't quite in the right place, or redundant or something. :-)

First off, I'm interested in a figure eight puffer. I've been waffling between it, an Indian dwarf and a South American. I figured I wanted something cooler looking and larger than the dwarf and found the likely prospect of having to trim the South American's tooth terrifying. Plus, brackish seemed like a fun little endeavor.

Anyway I plan on buying all the necessary setup items sometime in early January (the stuff can get expensive, so I'm saving up!), so with cycling time I expect to actually get the little guy around February. I want to keep 1 figure eight in a ten gallon tank, or possibly 2 in a 20 gallon. I'd like it to be heavily planted. I was just wondering if anyone has tips for beginning BW. I've read that its basically as simple as adding the appropriate amount of Instant Ocean, and that you don't need a protein skimmer or live rock. Am I missing something, because that really seems like no big deal at all?

I plan to also breed ramshorn snails and possibly ghost shrimp in a 5 gal. as feeders. Do these sound like an appropriate staple diet for a F8?

Also, I was wondering if people know the proper adult size (in BW) of figure eights. I've been getting conflicting answers from online sources-- from 1.5-8" I'm assuming approx. 3 inches is common. Also, does anyone know if it would be at all harmful to house one F8 alone? I know that they're often aggressive, so I figured keeping just one would alleviate possible problems, while I got used to running BW.

Any other random advice for a puffer newbie would be greatly appreciated. I had a painted turtle years back that died of a respiratory infection because I didn't understand their temperature requirements. I really want to become an expert on these puffers before having one in my care. Thanks!

Hi and welcome!

I have one F8 and two dwarf puffers.

My F8 lives in a 30-gallon long tank. (That is, its wider than it is tall.) F8s need 15 gallons each- or, some say, 15 for the first and 10 for each additional in the same tank. I use fake plants- the only living plant-like substance is algea that's taken over!

You don't need a skimmer or live rock, no. Those won't work at the lower salinity of brackish water. Its not exactly "not a big deal" to do brackish salt, but its not very complex, either. :)

My F8 is probably 3 inches nose to tail. He's pretty FAT too! :) Its not harmful to keep them alone. Mine seems to be dominant and I've tried twice now to have a second F8 with him and the second never does well in the end. *Shrug*

Welcome and I think you're going to love your F8 and The Puffer Forum. :)

[welcome]
I always love hearing from folks who plan way ahead of getting their puffer! Great job! I'd start by reading the F8 article in our Library, along with the feeding articles. If you are concerned about him being lonely, there's even an article on that in there. Puffers can live into their teens & the longest lived puffers have always been singletons.

Ghost shrimp can be harder to breed, and they usually breed in brackish water, but ramshorns need fresh water. Try cherry shrimp instead. They're easy to breed and purely FW. Shrimp and snails will be great food.

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I have 2 F8s in a 29 gallon. I've had them for a year and they still get along well. I got mine as a pair, so they've basically grown up together, but there's still no guarantee that they will always get along. I believe I've read that singletons tend to have better relationships with their owners. I do have a better relationship with Piglet. Blinky has one eye and it makes her a little aloof. Breeding snails is a good idea, I breed the ramshorns and I've found it's far more convenient to have them in ready supply. I would go with a 20 long for one puffer. You could do a 15, but in no time at all you will want to spoil your puffer and upgrade it's tank. I was just given a 30 breeder and I can hardly wait to move my guys in.

Thanks everybody! I've been stalking ebay and craigslist for equipment. Unfortunately all the good deals come with enormous cichlid I don't want. Clearly their owners didn't want them anymore either... I found someone selling two entire 55 and 30 gallon setups with stand for $200, but they couldn't give me much detail about the filtration system, so that made me nervous. I'd rather start fresh with a really reliable filter.

Would it be effective to house the feeder cherry shrimp and ramshorns in the same tank, say 10 gal? Or would they eat each other's eggs and whatnot? At what age do F8s get full grown (and full aggressive)? Do you guys treat your puffers for parasites automatically (assuming they're wild caught) or do you wait and see--what are some signs of internal parasites?

What have been people's experiences buying off of liveaquaria.com? Did your fish arrive healthy etc? I've only ever seen green spotted puffers in the stores around here (of course, sold as freshwater dwarf puffers...)
