tobies & GSP's?
I was wondering what you guys thought of 2 GSP's and a C. Valentini in a 72gal with 20gal sump?

The valentini's can be hardcore fin nippers but with that amount of space you should probably be fine. Just make sure you have some good filtration/skimming. As usual, keep an eye out for perforated fins for awhile. Once everyone settles in they will likely be fine unless something changes.
Hope this helps...

Any Canthisgaster can be nippy...I had a Canthisgaster for 6 months who never touched a Mandarin, then one day he thought the Mandarin needed a perforated tail. He was moved the same day.
Although any Canthigaster can be nippy, they should probably be okay. Just give some hiding places. Canthigasters are seldom viscious, nippy yes, really destrutive, no. If you have done brackish puffers you are probably used to it.
NO snowflake...he will attempt to fit anything even remotely close to the size of his mouth/head into it. I would only keep a snowflake with a full sized marine puffer (arothron nigro/meleagris/mappa/hisipidus, diodon holocanthus, etc) Given the tank size that is probably out of the question longterm so perhaps best to skip the snowflake w' the GSP's + Canthigaster.
If you must do an eel perhaps a chainlink moray (don't get as big) with the largest valentini you can find. Borderline, but a much better fit than snowflakes longterm.
Hope this helps...Lee

I was under the impression that the Snowflake is a small eel:

and a good aquarium candidate. I have to admit that while a have much experience with puffers (species only arrangements), I have no eel experience at all. Thanks so much for your help! Any other suggestions? Right now both my GSP's are only around 1", and the Valentini is bigger. I'm going to fish the ascent to full salt water with my GSP's first. Wish me luck! Also, out of curiosity, have you ever heard of an Arothron nigropunctatus successfully housed with GSP's? Not my plan, just curious.

hehe, idk exactly where AJ is grabbing the moray thing from, maybe a name confusion, but a snowflake moray is generally a 1.5ft animal that will not have any issues with puffers, generally they are extreme escape artists, but they are not overly agressive if fed.
also an invert eater and shell crusher , not a piscivore.
arothrons and gsps are not a great idae being that they are generally not as agressive when small and grow at least 2x the size of gsps, which can lead to a huge dominance issues with overly territorial small gsps starting a war and getting killed by a arothron that has had enough.

Thanks Jager, I thought the snowflake was smaller than most. You're right about the Arothron/gsp mix, I was just curious if anyone ever had. DOn't worry, it was never in the cards! So then what's your opinion, Jager (or anyone), should I try my two gsp's and my Valentini together, or leave the valentini where it is and try incorporating a snowflake? I think I'd be pushing it with both. (72 gal, 20 gal sump). Thanks!

mmm i would add the eel to the 72 only if you can seal every opening that you can find. including in the sump. my snowflake enjoys the ride down my overflow box tubing into the sump tank where he can chill without being bothered by damsels who share his homes.
i would think that with your consistant maintenance schedule you could do all 4 in the tank, but i would add the eel to the toby first, then the gsps after, or if your toby is a fin nipper extreme then the gsps and eel first and the toby last. BIG thing here is that GSPs generally view small morays as chew toys, so the bigger the moray at the time of purchase the better, also find out what they are feeding it.
many LFS's feed all marays feeder fish of some sort or silversides, regardless of their actual nature. same with many tobies who will eat a goldfish if they are srtarved.
if that is the case id pass on it until you can secure a better one.
I would just pull one of the stores that we have for sale and ship it on, i can ship them fairly well, but the shipping up to you is a PITA overnighting
feel free to hit me on any of my messenging services if you have further questions, and ill pm the cell phone as well if youd rather use that.
As they say show it or stow it. so heres my old puffer that passed due to intestinal issues, and the eel of mine that enjoys the overflow rides. also the brown spike on the left side is a sea cucumber, which the eel has never bothered.
