Puffers + cyano + General Tonic

Hi, i have a tank that is filled with cyano-bacteries and i have been givin the tip to use somtihing called generaltonic to wipe the cyano away.
Could this harm my dwarf puffer in any way?

I use ChemiPure for cyano. I've also heard of using Maracyn.

Probably the same concept, throw in antibiotics to kill the cynobacteria.

I'm assuming there are puffers in the tank? Its never a good idea to add medications to a puffer tank if you can help it.

There are some different ways to discourage cynobacteria.. one of the ways that works best for me in all the times I"ve dealt with it was to really increase the current in the tank. You want that water moving a lot. Any "dead" or still areas are where the cyno likes to grow.

May get rid of it but you still need to get to the cause of it otherwise it will keep coming back.

Oh, yet another qustion, how do i know when the cyano is dead? ^^

Follow the directions exactly. Did you remove all you could by hand before treating? Be sure to do the recommended water changes. You may have to treat twice.

Yeah, this chemical is not for treating cyano but for treating "all" bacterial decisess so there were no real instructions, just guidelines. But i did have the correct doze in the water. an yeah, i did remove alot. As mutch as i could. The cemical stops working after 4 days according to the label on the bottle, should i change like 50% water and add new plus half a doze medicine? Or should i change 50% water, add carbon to the filter and wait a couple of days before putting new medicine in the water. (the first option seems best to me, because the cyano may come back in those non-medicine days)

What exactly are you treating with? If it's an antibiotic, there is a good chance you will destroy your biological filtration, which is why I recommend only Maracyn or Chemipure for this.

could you use melafix to kill cyanobacteria? its an antibiotic, so in theory it would work, but do any of you know for sure? i'm pretty sure my green algae is cyano after looking up pictures.

A simple 3 day blackout on the tank will kill of cyano

Melafix is not an antibiotic--more like an antiseptic.

ahh thanks for that PP. the bottle says antibiotic an i always thought that was why it helped heal wounds, by killing bacteria that could infect them.

With a good ole large water change after!!

And as taureandragon76 said in his other post; if you don't fight the causes of algae the algae will always come back!

How long do you have the lights on for? May be worth cutting down by an hour or 2.
