Help with my dragon goby

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Help with my dragon goby

Post by taureandragon76 »

ph - 8.3
temp - 79
ammonia - 0
nitrate - 0
nitrite - 0
SG - 1.005

I had a bigger healthy one that I traded in to my trusted lfs for 2 small ones. Upon arrival in my tank both were acting normal. They were drip acclimatized. Past couple days one of them has been acting weird where the other one is looking and acting fine. The one with the problem has a lump on it's side halfway down it's body, sides of the head seem sunken in, top fin are either layed right back or not really there(hard to tell). Earlier tonight as I was checking him out he ended up getting stuck on the filter intake of the AC 110 and sometimes when I check him he looks dead all contorted on the bottom of the tank, when I touch him he does swim away. I just treated the tank with prazi-pro as it is all I currently have on hand.

What else can I do, or does it sound like he is a goner and maybe I should cull?

Was he looking that skinny when you picked him out? Definitely sounds like severe IPs.

Agreed on the severe IP's.....give him a chance and treat in a hospital tank if you have one. Remember these guys are scaleless and as delicate a puffers in regards to meds, possibly more so. if he's eating try to treat the food, he may also take the pre-treated discus foods if they are soft enough and allowed to sink. You could also treat some sinking shrimp pellets and see if he'll take them....I have been successful once out of 6 treating a group that had had bad IP's when I rescued them and he's still with me, had same symptoms.

So adding prazi-pro should help then I hope. He didn't look too skinny when I picked him out. I should have been thinking when I first got them though to treat right away being as they are most likely wild caught.

Anything else I can do besides what I have done?
Should I treat the tank again after 48 hrs?

I'd treat just like you would for a puffer because they are scaleless just like them. One thing to keep in mind is that they are filter feeders and I'm not sure how the meds will affect them.....

You need to soak their food in Prazi, to get the med inside to treat internal parasites.

I oops on that one lol, nitrates are 10-20ppm

PP I have taken both the goby's outta the main tank and setup a hospital tank for both of them. Even though I am pretty sure it is only the one with problems I figure it couldn't hurt to treat both. I keep a small internal filter in the main tank just for some added flow so it was easy setting up a little hospital tank using that already seeded filter. I have soaked the bloodworms in prazi and garlic, just don't have any vitamins.

Is it ok to refreeze any of the leftover bloodworms as I am running really low on prazi and don't wanna dump if I don't have to. So far this evening I have managed to get him to eat a couple of worms but think they might be a little stressed with being moved from a 60g tank to a 5g tank lol.

If these guys don't make it, this will totally bum me out after getting rid of my healthy 12" fat one to have these two little guys. Originally I was gonna stick with the 3 but the big guy was eating everything before they had a chance to get anything.

He just ate a few more, the other one that I think is fine doesn't want anything to do with the eyedropper full of bloodworms. Should I just overfeed the tank too make sure they both get enough and then clean up any leftover in the morning?
