Crunchy Foods Question

Post by pufferpuggirl »

Me again.

I guess you could say that I've gotten into a "rut" in regards to feeding all my puffers. Mealtime at the Puffer House generally consists of shrimp, mussels, and bloodworm. I have cockles but none of my puffers will eat them, so they are basically a waste. When it came to my attention that some of my redeyes had to have their teeth trimmed, I realised that I was failing in providing my puffers with crunchy foods. I have a snail tank, but with the exception of my GSP's, turgidus, F8's and Ceylons .... getting the rest of my puffers eating snails has not been very successful. I did get ahold of some bigger snails with softer shells (not really sure what they were .. pond snails maybe?) but for some reason they aren't staying alive. I thought I'd put them in with my ramshorn, but they've all died. I don't know if they ramshorn have killed them or what. I also put them in my red-claw crab tank (recently moved my Matano out and put the red-claw in), but they don't seem to have lasted in there either, which is a shame because my puffers seemed very keen on eating them.

So, with the good snails not breeding and hard to get ahold of, and the ramshorn not being taken .... I'm sort of back to square one. However, today at the grocery store I bought some raw shrimp with shells on (the shrimp I've been feeding has been cooked without shells), thinking that would be a good way to help keep the teeth trimmed in some of my puffers. I had a very good response on those. I thought because I've been giving my puffers cooked shrimp that they would ignore the raw kind, but I was pleasantly surprised, especially by some of my GSP's, which had stopped taking the cooked shrimp so eagerly -- they tore into the raw shrimp and were voraciously eating it up. That put a huge smile on my lips. Generally all my puffers seemed to be very happy at being given the raw shrimp with the shell on. In fact, my Abei knocked the shell off and then ate just the shell! The only puffer that didn't take part in the Shrimp-a-rama was BeeBoo, my MBU. I am treating him for IP's ... so maybe that's it. I'm still seeing the stringy poo, so he may just not be feeling too keen right now and that's why he passed on the shrimp.

Now I have another question --- since I have gotten such a good response on the raw shrimp with shell-on .... how often should I try to feed this to them? Let me also say that I have to get these at the fresh fish counter and that they aren't cheap (nothing in the UK is though) .... so I'm wondering if I would have to feed these every time I normally feed the puffers, or if I could get away with feeding raw shrimp without the shell (which is much easier to get ahold of) for most of the mealtimes and supplement with shrimp with shell-on every week or twice a week, whatever would be helpful in keeping their teeth trimmed down. Of course I will still try to get them to eat snails too. What do you think?

It's just that I'm having a hard time finding any other crunchy foods that the puffers will take. Like I said, the cockles were a waste of money. I bought some live mussels once, and that was interesting, some of my puffers enjoyed them, but I ended up throwing away half of them because I wasn't sure how to store them and I don't think they stay alive much after you bring them home. I tried feeding them scallops once, but no one ate any of that, in fact, I ended up pulling it out of the tanks and feeding my dogs the scallops. So I'm at a loss as to what to feed my puffers to help keep their teeth trimmed. I can't imagine even trying to trim a MBU's teeth. I wouldn't even want to try that!! :?

Any suggestions?? I am open to anything that might work at this point. I've already tried smashing the snails with a hammer, and that didn't do much but make a mess and make me feel sorry for the snails (I didn't know they would bleed!). :o

Back to square one again! :(

Well yeah, that would be great, but we don't get such things over here. I can't even find frozen ones in any of the stores I've been in. That's what I'm saying .... it's hard to find anything over here, other than bloodworm, mussels, cockles and shrimp. :(

Great Britain actually is a VERY BIG island -- and the coast is about 100+ from us.

We might have "ocean" all around us, but that doesn't mean there's all sorts of seafood and shellfish available to me in my area. :(

Hmmmm, I can't get cockles and George has decided he doesn't like shrimp in the shell - he won't touch them unless it's to try and work the flesh out of the shell to eat it. He almost gets a frustrated, disgusted look on his face about the shell!

So, I'm hoping the cherry shrimp grow quick and that I can find cockles (have had no luck so far) so he can eat them... he loves scallops but it's going to be a while before the other half goes diving for them again and they don't seem to carry them in the local shops. Also, the snails aren't growing fast enough either :-(

I bought frozen cockles at Dobbies, don't know if you have any of those where you are. My puffers weren't interested in the cockles in the least and all they did was foul the tank.

As for shrimp with shell on, well that's what I've gone to because I'm concerned about BeeBoo's (the MBU) dentition. He ate some of the fleshy meat that was hanging out of the shell last night, but he won't really eat much more of it, but I'm just going to keep offering it to him, and if he gets hungry enough, I guess he will eat it. My other puffers, with a few exceptions are taking the shell-on raw shrimp very nicely. My Abei, Hymie, is actually loving the raw shrimp and I've seen him eating the shell too, or at least he's biting it, so that's a good thing.

But I'd really like to get something harder and crunchier for them all. I was trying to buy a quantity of red-claw crabs thinking that I could feed those every now and then, but the deal fell through, and if I buy them from the LFS near me, they will cost me £3.50 each!! And with having about 12 tanks of puffers, that can get expensive and the crabs are pretty much hit & miss anyway, they aren't something they've always got in stock.

I just feel that I'm stuck in this bloodworms, mussels and shrimp rut .... and I'd like to be able to provide my puffers with some variety, but finding the variety is the problem. Seafood just isn't that easy to find. Oh you can get all sorts of stuff already prepared with sauces and pre-cooked, but nothing that is suitable for the puffers. Not even ASDA (the English Wal-Mart) has anything good to offer. I don't know about anyone else, but my puffers think squid is disgusting, and I'm inclined to agree with them!

LOL - George likes squid rings... he'll bite through one side of it and then look like he's sucking up a noodle with one end in his mouth and the rest sticking out!

No Dobbies near us but I'll keep looking :-)

Can you find the raw, shell on shrimp frozen at the grocery store? That's where I get mine. Its pretty cheap, usually cheaper than the cooked stuff (and cooking it takes out a lot of the good stuff, you want raw).

Can you go to a store that sells reptiles and buy crickets/grasshoppers?

Not many of my puffers would eat scallops either, but my burrfish will, and so does my boyfriend *snicker* so we do have some of those on hand.

The one time I tried mollusks (clam shell type things?) Paris went nuts, then bit the shell instead of the meat, hurt herself, got scared and I've never convinced her to try again.

Anyways, I feed a main diet to my puffers of raw, shell on shrimp and night crawlers. When I breed enough of them to sneak some out, they get ramshorn snails as a treat, and ocassionally crickets and grasshoppers. But neither of mine are really the kind that need to wear their teeth down too much.

The red cherry shrimp are tiny, but breed fast enough to make up for it.. A larger puffer might not get a whole lot of nutrition out of one, but they'll have a blast chasing it down and some crunch for their teeth.

I can get the raw shell-on shrimp, but we don't seem to have any frozen near me. I have been to several different stores and they have a number of different brands of frozen raw "shelled" shrimp, but none frozen with shells left on. The only ones I can get are fresh, and they aren't cheap either. But if that's all I can get, it's better than nothing.

As for a reptile shop, there's one about 15 miles from us, but to be honest, I am not keen on having crickets and grasshoppers in my house waiting to be fed to my puffers. I am not bothered by snakes, or spiders, or rats or mice .... but bugs -- they give me the creeps, literally!!! I definitely have a phobia about insects, mostly roaches, crickets, and things like that (not ants or stick bugs). And it's not as if I didn't have to live around bugs for a good portion of my life. Anyone who's ever spent anytime in Florida will probably know what I'm talking about when I say they have some LARGE bugs there. But keeping them in my home, no way!

So .... I've still not had anyone answer the all-important question : If I'm feeding my puffers raw shrimp with the shell on, how many times a week would I have to do this in order to keep their dental problems at bay? That's what I'm mainly concerned with. I just don't want to worry about having to do any trimming, especially on my MBU puffer, it would stress him as much as it would stress me, and he puffs up any time he's brought out of the water. In fact, when I moved him from the community tank to where he is now, he puffed up really big and I had to shake it out of him because he wouldn't expell the air and I was afraid it would kill him.

I know you're not near the coast, but how about taking a day trip (you can pretend your taking hubby for a lovely seaside day out - he'll never know!!) & collecting some snails etc to freeze at home? Theres fab mini mussels on beaches around me & loads of tiny snails. I check that beaches are clean (awarded with green flag) & take a container & bring back loads at a time - they last for ages in the freezer. I freezer them in little batches in ice cube trays, then I can just defrost a few at a time. I know you have to be careful with parasites etc, but I have been doing it for just over 10 years now, with no problems.

Hmmmm, I think that's a great idea! The other half is going diving from Eastbourne tomorrow so I think I'll give him the task of getting some sea snails, scallops, small crabs, etc :-)
