Is it o.k. to have 2 GSPs?

Post by S&FW_FishyFriend »

I have a 46 gallon bowfront... would it be o.k. to have two GSPs, if similarly sized? I am getting one on Monday (or Tuesday), but wanted to know if it would be o.k. to get him a GSP buddy? The one I'm getting on Monday is about 2" and I was thinking if I got another one first (the monday addition is known to be a wee bit aggressive with other fish- not necessarily GSPs) then the more aggressive one would come into an already established territory... What do you think? I could always put them in a larger tank later, that wouldn't be a problem. I would want them in a marine environment as adults anyway- so this way I could set up a tank with live rock and then just transfer them... What do you all think? This is my tank setup:

If I do have two GSPs, should I add more plants?

No. GSP's need 30 gallon each. You only have enough room for one and a couple small fish, like mollies or something.

But he kills anything like that... from what I've heard anyway! It wouldn't be long term, just until I got them up to marine parameters and then I'd put them in a 60-80 gallon marine tank with live rock... They'd both are only about 2 inches long now...

If you have intentions to upgrade and are 150% sure that the upgrade will happen, then, yes, that's okay.

Some GSPs will not get along with each other. It's all about the personality of the individual. You can definitely give it a go, though!

Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I already have the 80 gallon tank (2 actually) just need to build the stand (next week) and I'll be good to go on cycling the marine tank for the 2 GSPs... Thanks! Just thought about maybe getting a 60 gallon tank for them, but the 80 would be way better for them space wise though... Plus I already have it and it was FREE!

They'll appreciate the extra swim room.

Are they together already? If your present GSP is 2" & a known killer, he may not accept another one--especially into an established territory. Generally, they should be introduced as juvies & grown up together. Minimally, you need to remove the GSP, redecorate the tank completely (especially moving any favorite caves, etc), add the new fish for a while, letting it find a nice territory for itself & then add the old puffer back, keeping a close eye on things for a while, ready to seperate at any time.

I think you misunderstood...or I wasn't clear... the known "killer" (of other fish... not GSPs) is not in my tank yet. I am getting him from another lady. I am putting a new puffer into my pufferless (and furthermore, fishless) brackish tank so that he can establish a territory and then adding the "killer" later and if that doesn't work then I'll just get another tank! Sorry for any confusion...

May or may not work, since they are not juvies. Be prepared to seperate.

What size is considered juvenille? They're about 2 inches long right now... What is that considered?

You certainly have enough decor to distract them & give them teritorries but they seem to like wach other.
