Emergency Cycling!!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Emergency Cycling!!!
Tank set up: 3 weeks ago, fish added one week ago.
Size: 5.5 gallons, with Aqueon Quietflow 10 filter.
Fish in tank: Two freshwater puffers (one deceased, removed this morning), and a pleco
Feeding: twice daily.
Products Used: API Stresscoat, Seachem Prime, Aquarium Salt
Nitrite levels: 0-0.25ppm.
-The store has yet to provide me with my test kits for Ammonia or nitrates, so I do not know those numbers.-
I have been in the process of an emergency cycle, because I was told stresscoat was enough to properly prepare the tank for my pets. Eek. I purchased prime this morning, and have followed the instructions on the bottle to hopefully save the remaining puffer (my pleco seems to be just fine) and I am absolutely terrified that I have done irrevocable damage to my poor Napoleon.
How can I tell if conditions in the tank are improving?
Also-- he keeps getting stuck on the intake valve of the filter... what can I do to stop this?

Re: Emergency Cycling!!!
Also need to note that a 75% water change was completed last night, and this seemed to make them better... but I believe the stress was too much for my younger puffer, who was rather skittish.

Re: Emergency Cycling!!!
StressCoat (as you now know) does nothing. Same with Prime. Immediately go out and get Tetra SafeStart - it's the only product besides Dr. Tim's that actually instantly cycles the tank. (Well, not instantly, but it's as close as we can get.) It's not cheap so take some bucks.

What kind of puffer? I'm really hoping you're gonna say dwarf. Otherwise, the 5g tank is way too small for anything else. I'd return the pleco. Did you know the common pleco grows 18+"? The advise above is right on--don't use any other product other than the 2 mentioned.
Tank conditions will be improved when you see no nitrite or ammonia. Try fitting a sponge over the intake of your filter but a healthy puffer whouldn't get stuck on a normal intake screen.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

PP, we were on Live Chat about this. Both didn't make it. They LFS also told her that they were both DP's, they were GSP's. She's now cycling it for a DP.

I know, she was bummed. She said one had its face in the gravel, that's what DJ did just before she died. I knew it wouldn't last long.

Yeah, sticking to the intake isn't good either...

I really hope there's a little bit of heaven set aside for all the creatures we humans have sent to an early death. In their part of heaven, all the puffers would be able to eat and eat and eat and never burst or get fatty liver disease!
