The pleco is with the puffers. Is this bad? They leave him alone and if they do start bothering him (not aggressively) he just puts his huge fins out and moves a bit and they retreat.

The LFS said he would be a good tankmate until I went high brackish.

Plecos hate salt. You need to get him out ASAP.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

I don't know of any pleco species that can live in 10gs. Can you possibly return him?

Yes I can, but he wont be living in it, he will be in it for the time being.
I have a 100 gallon tank I am prepping, I just have a few more questions to answer and then set it up.
Then the 34 gallon will be a low maintenance freshwater fish aquarium.

the ten gallon should be fine for sometime i believe, he is still pretty small.

He's gonna need a way bigger tank than that at 6". Is the 10g cycled?

I started it this morning so not yet but it will be soon.
I know these fish grow fast but I will have the 100 gallon up in two weeks tops so the 34 gallon will be his fairly soon.

I just have to pick what filter type/s for the 100 gallon. Im thinking oversized (just to keep my options open later) canister filter and a protein skimmer to add once the salinity rises. I have not idea if that is proper for GSPs though.

Hmmm... adding a 6" fish to an uncycled 10g tank isn't going to be any better than having him in a BW tank, I'm afraid.
