Stunted GSP?

Post by stamura »

Almost 3 years in a 55 gallon, and my GSP has only grown from about 2.5 inches to about 3.25 inches. I adopted him from a couple who had a roommate abandoned him. He was in a 30 gallon, freshwater with freshwater salt. They said she had only had him 3 months and she had been feeding some sort of pellet food (they had the container, but I don't recall what it was) and would occassionally bring home some snails from the local fish store. I drip acclimated him to a fully cycled brackish tank (1.005), then brought the tank up to 1.015 over the course of 3 months. Salinity has been maintained at 1.015 and he has had the tank to himself the entire time. Diet has been live snails and ghost shrimp, krill (FD and frozen soaked in vitamin water), bits of clam and mussel.

I'm wondering if he is stunted or if growth this slow is normal.

I got mine a year ago, when she was about 1.5 inches long, and like you, put her right away into a 55 gallon tank. Now, she's only maybe 3.5 inches or so, and has been in full marine conditions since 6 months ago. From what I've read, these guys are real slow growers, so I'm guessing this is normal.

If you want a fast-growing puffer, find a Ceylon. My Corny is growing like a weed: got him at 1.5" about 9 months ago, and now he's a solid 5" and getting bigger every day it seems.

Mine will be 3 years this Nov They were about 1/2 inch when brought home. They have been in a 55g since 2 months after we brought them. They still are not 3 inches! From what I read it takes 3 years to be full grown. Not looking that way with my puffs.
