If you're going w/a pleco, get a dwarf species.

I've tried otos and ghost shrimp with my red-eye pair. I had a few small tetras at one point, before I shifted them to another tank. The ghost shrimp, as expected, will start decreasing in number, and the puffs start looking rounder. My puffs have, however, left both the otos and tetras alone. The tetras were never around long enough for them to experiment fin pecking though.
I'd rather be a puffer than a snail. Yes I would, if I could, I surely would...
