Gsp scared of light?

my beloved GSP seems to be scared of the light. when i wake up and turn the light on his tummy will be bright white but then as soon as he wakes up completely his belly fades to brown. he also was kinda traumatized by my girlfriend. he ate one of the fish my girlfriend liked so she hit the glass where he was and scared him now he hides whenever he sees me is there anyway i can get him to like me again.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Some puffers, not just GSPs, seem to be affected in one way or another by light. For example, my Ceylon is very spooky when it comes to turning on or off his aquarium lights, and I have to make sure I take note of where he is in the tank when I'm ready to either turn them on or turn them off. If he's at one end, I turn on the opposite side's light, and then wait for him to swim to the other side before I turn on the other light. I also make sure he sees me before I do this, because if I surprise him, he goes wild and would jump out of the tank if I didn't have every gap tightly covered. And like your GSP, while the lights are off, his belly is nice and white - but when I turn on the lights, his belly turns black. Later on in the day it will go back to being white, unless he's hungry and see me and starts begging for food, at which time his belly turns black again until he's fed.

Your girlfriend hit the glass? Kind of don't know what to say about that...but as far as how to get him back "talking" to you, I'm sure he'll come around once he sees that you're his feeder and other people stop scaring him.

GSPs are pretty certain to eat a lot of the fish that you put in there! Read these - they might help you pick some tankmates that won't get eaten.

Hitting the glass will really freak out a fish, so it's no wonder he's a little wary.

he used to be fairly aggressive but now he simmered down and doesnt touch the other fish but his stomach doesnt turn back to white during the day as long as the lights are on his stomach is brown even during feeding time. by the way i feed mine bloodworms and meal worms, is this ok he doesnt really eat anything else i used to feed him tadpoles but he stopped eating them same with brine shrimp, i just worry that he isnt getting enough nutrients from these foods. he wont eat feeder fish or freeze dried foods either.

I think your girlfriend needs to realise that the puffer doesn't understand that what it did wasn't a good thing. You put it in with other fish, or other fish in with him, and he figured "fair game". I don't think it's quite right to take your anger out on a fish that can't understand what you're doing. I'm surprised that your puffer didn't die of fright, no wonder it's hiding.

oh yeah i did forget to mention i do feed him a steady supply of snails and ghost shrimp but usually only one a day cuz believe it or not my snails cant reproduce fast enough so i can feed him a good meal of just these thats why i use bloodworms and stuff but i looked on the back and it said there only like four percent protein and nothing else looked very nutritional either, i just wanted to be sure that im not gonna kill him of malnutrition.

Go to your local supermarket and buy a bag of frozen RAW seafood melody or raw shrimp with shell on, mussels ect. Freeze, then thaw out what you need in tank water mix with vitamins.

ok ill get some more shell food but i would still like to know why his stomach turns brown when i turn the lights on. is the lighting maybe to bright or something like that.

My puffer changes colour depending on his mood... when he's grumpy or just woken up or doesn't want to be watched he goes dark with lighter colored spots (he's an Abei puffer) and I understand that most puffers go dark when they're not happy. Maybe the light needs a reflector, maybe it's still stressed because of having the tank banged on.

Your GSP is light-sensitive, but don't worry. The change in color and light sensitivity is normal.
