Crushed coral substrate?

what is that? cause i read in the library crushed coral and something else substrate is used to keep the ph around 8 correct me if im wrung but what is that? crushed coral substrate?

Yep, you're right. Crushed coral is a buffering substrate. So is aragonite.

I dont know for crushed coral, Probably your LFS. Aragonite is different. Never seen a fish store that dosent have it. Usually in several size grains.

Almost any LFS that deals in saltwater will have it.

Well, it depends on whether you want freshwater or brackish/saltwater. If you're going to do a freshwater tank for regular community tropical fish, no, you don't want it. If you're going to do African Cichlids (this is a generalization; I don't know much about cichlids), you might want at least a fair percentage of it mixed in with your other substrate. If you want brackish or saltwater, yeah, get it or aragonite.

Since this in the BW puffer forum, I'm assuming this is for BW puffers? I prefer CC in my F8 BW tank, because it's easier to clean with the gravel cleaner/Python, w/o loosing much substrate. Aragonite sand is a different story.

i am new to brackish today and asked the saltwater expert at my LFS and he said its not required but then again thats why we're here cuz we cant get good enough answers from the LFS. so i ended up putting a coral rock with a hole in it cuz i already ad gravel dwn in my gs tank of 3 hope it works out.

When you upgrade them to a larger tank, you can start it with CC. In the meantime, what's your pH in there now? You could mix CC in with the gravel or place it in a bag in the back of the tank or in your filter, to buffer.

You have 3 GSPs? What size tank? You're eventually gonna need 90g for them. At least 45g for them as juvies.

my ph is stedy 8 even out of the tap so it may not be needed but i will try a small bag in the filter how much do you think theyre in a 55g now theyre juvys. does it soften the water or just keep the ph steady?

Actually, it doesn't soften the water, it hardens it. It leeches calcium and other minerals into the water, which is hardening. The minerals keep the pH steady, which is buffering.
