compatibility between GSP and figure 8
hello, first off is there a difference between a spotted puffer and a green spotted puffer or are they the same fish? My next question is i wanted to know if a spotted puffer and a figure 8 puffer can live together? If so when the puffers get older i would like to keep them at marine conditions, have a protine skimmer and some live rock. I know spotted puffers like the marine conditions but i dont know if figure 8 puffers can tollerate the marine conditions. Also i am cycling a brackish water tank right now. I am cycling it with fancy guppies they seem very happy, i have 9 fancy guppies in the tank right now is that enough and if i cycle it for a week is that enough time? Thank you so much!

The figure 8 needs to stay at a low salinity, about 1.008 maximum. They really won't get along as they get older, too. GSPs are far too aggressive.

Yup in the long run they both require different salinity levels. I have heard that lfs's sometimes mislable F8's and GSP's as one another.

Please check out their profiles in PufferPedia (under the Learn tab at the top of the page). They are 2 separate species and need different conditions. GSPs have more of a leopard spotty pattern while Figure 8s have a more blotchy maze-y pattern.
They cannot live together. If you had a large enough tank, you might be able to get away with it for a few weeks, but since the GSPs need rising salinities as they grow, it would not be for long. Also, these are both very territorial fish, and they will fight each other. It is best to just never keep them together for these 2 reasons. Pick one or the other or have 2 tanks.
Figure 8 puffers need very low brackish conditions, ideally 1.004-1.008. GSPs need full saltwater conditions as adults. That's right, need. They don't just like them, they need to have saltwater to have a full life.
