GSP with Mouth Problems

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

GSP with Mouth Problems
As some of you will know, I have a 10yr old GSP that has had problems with his teeth in the last year or so. They have now been trimmed right back. You may also know that he does not close his mouth properly. As a result of this, he sometimes gets bits of food caught in his mouth, because he cannot chew properly, resulting in me catching him to remove the debris before it rots. The worst offending food was cockle. So for about the last couple of months I have not fed cockle to him. However, for the past month or so, I have had to catch him every 2-3 days to clear his mouth of what looks like cockle! (is smells very fishy too). It starts with a little bit one day, then over the next couple of days as the "stuff" softens, it seems to grow, until it fills his mouth & I have no choice but to catch him again. What can this white material be? It upsets me to have to do this to him so often & I know it cannot be good for him. I am at a complete loss. I have only fed him bloodworms the last couple of days, yet I have just removed 3 lumps of white, fishy stuff from his mouth. He is very good when I handle him, but I fear that the stress from doing it so often will kill him. Please help if you can.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
Is there any chance that it is a fungus?
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
It looks a bit like fungus when it is in his mouth, but when its out, its exactly like solid bits of cockle.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
But you haven't been feeding cockle for a few days, so that doesn't make sense. Have you treated with Pimafix/Melafix?

No, I haven't treated with anything cos I just thought it was food! It doesn't look like fungus when its out - its too solid & smells strongly of fish?

I would treat. It can't hurt, and I think it will help.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
Sounds fungal and I think you may need something stronger than just Primifix and Melafix. Also could be an abscess and when you remove the tissue you are actually debriding it, if so some sort of antibiotic would be in order. Someone who knows more about those will have to let you know what to use.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
His mouth does not look sore when the pieces have been removed - I can see inside easily, cos his mouth is always a little open. When the bits have been removed & after he has got over me catching him, he seems very much more active & is begging for food.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
I have decided to try the Pimafix in case it is a fungus. His mouth is clear today & he is stalking a snail as I speak! It usually takes 2-3 days for his mouth to be a problem, so if I do the 7 day course without any problems - I guess I will have my answer!

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
Well, despite his mouth being completely clear yesterday & giving the first dose of Pimafix, this morning I can see the white stuff coming back. He is still active & keen to eat. Don't know whether to clear his mouth again, or give the Pimafix a chance. Each time I handle him, no matter how gentle I am, it takes its toll on his poor fins.

Just caught him again & cleared his mouth. Wondered about getting histology done on the stuff to try & find out what it is.

Re: GSP with Mouth Problems
Go ahead and try that. You may also need to get a stronger antibiotic.

Like I said earlier, I think this is fungal. Try something stronger than Pimifix.
