Need help with new fish tank

Post by extremegamer »

I have a 70 gallon tank coming today and I really really love puffer fish but have never had one.

I have few topical fresh water fish and plan to go with a fresh water puffer but I need some advice....

-What puffers can I get that are suitable for a tank of that size but I'm only intrested in a 6inch or so size puffer(must be fresh water).
-Need prices on how much it costs to feed the suggest puffers.
-Can I house more then 1 puffer together and what fish can go with puffers(refering to cleaning fish).
-Need help setting up a feeder tank to harvest food with my old 20 gallon tank(after fish are given to a good home)

What I do know is that I will be using sand and a lot of plants to hide rather then rocks and pots. This will be a display tank for my living room.
Being that this will be sand I have to stir the sand once a week during water changes and I am yet to understand how much water to filter out.....
I have a filter coming with the tank that will be for a 140 gallon tank or so so its a well overpowered filter for there messy habits.

Also will tapping on the glass stress them enough to make them puff? I have 2 kids a fear they may do this time to time for the first bit
that I own it.

- Auriglobus Sirus- Elongated Golden Puffer
- Carinotetraodon Irrubesco – Red tailed redeye puffer
- Carinotetraodon Salivator –Striped redeye puffer
- Carinotetraodon Travancoricus – Dwarf Puffer / Pygmy Puffer
- Colomesus Asellus – South American Puffer

- Tetraodon Cutcutia – Common Puffer
- Tetraodon Duboisi – Dubois’ Freshwater Puffer / Reticulated Puffer
- Tetraodon Miurus – Congo Puffer

Feeding a puffer is an ongoing task. You need snails [general rule - the size of the puffers eye] and other crustaceans and invertebrates. Bloodworms are a great food. If frozen, just defrost them in tank water or vitamin water. Unless you have the whole diet planned out, it's impossible to tell how much it will cost you in food.

As for cleaning fish, they usually are eaten from what I've seen, although some puffers leave them alone. Ghost and Cherry Shrimp will clean the tank, but as soon as the puffer realizes that they can be eaten, it will eat them all.

Snails are really your best bet for breeding. Ghost shrimp are darned near impossible, although Cherry Shrimp will breed occasionally. The problem with breeding shrimp is feeding the babies.

Snail breeding- Set up a bare tank, and put 5-10 snails in to start. Over time, you will see more and more little snails popping out of egg sacs all over! For feeding, just put in some algea wafers and occasionally a lettuce leaf. Not sure on filtering or heating, or if you even need to.

I hope that helped a little : )

I think I'll get this one here.

But i also grabbed a 26 gallon tank with the 70 gallon tank now my only questions for now is...

-Can he live in the 25 gallon tank? for now since I'm new and would hate to sey up a monster size tank to experiance massive issues
-I need a menu for my friend. The cheaper the better... for the time being.
-Also anyone know the cost of these guys?
-What type of plants are best for these guys? and do live plants require a neon light? if so I must replace both tank lights.
Also what wattage of light?

Great choice! They're one of my favorite puffers.

All I can help with for your second set of questions is the tank size question.

Yes, he can live in it for a while, almost until he's full grown; but will eventually need at least a 30 gallon.

Mine seemed happy enough in her 15g tank, I think a 26 should work out fine. She mostly stayed burried in the sand up to her eyeballs, until she was hungry then she would be up front begging. She never touched snails but loved pretty much anything else I fed her, once she got used to eating dead fods. I planted the sides & back & left the middle for her to burrow in. I had a mangrove "cave" she never used.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

Try the feeding/diet article in the Library.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
