Python cleaner question

Post by Pufffish »

Hi, i was thinking about getting a python http://www.petco.com/product/2762/Pytho ... aintenance for my 20g tank as well as for my future tanks, but i had one question. Is there a way to add salt and dechlorinators through the python? Or do you just add it all after you put the water in the tank after a small water change?

I drain part of the tank, add the dechlorinator and then fill the tank. There isn't a way to do it through the Python. A guy could get rich with an idea like that.....hmmmmm

I add the dechlor before filling & slowly add salt to the impeller section of my HOB filter, as it's filling.

Ok thanks for the feedback, just got my first fish (F8 in a 20g by himself) and got tired of buckets just through cycling so i will definitely pick up a python.

Pretty much the same as what has been said. Drain. Add half the dechlor before refill, add rest at the end. In the brackish tanks I would have the salt pre-dissolved in a container of water and then add at a couple of intervals during refilling. Never had any issues with it that way.

Premixing is definately the better way to go than my method.

I used to have a bucket with a heater and powerhead and leave it on for 24 hours but it became time consuming especially as it was upstairs and kept me awake at night.

In the end my preferred method was to measure out the salt. Use boiling water in a container, stir it up a little, that dissolved it completely. I let it cool down and then it was good to pour in. Much quicker and less messing especially when cleaning out multiple brackish tanks in one sitting.

I'm so glad I came across this post, I've got 5 tanks and a turtle tub in my basement and I'm pretty much sick of buckets....and the mold/algae that I seem to have created on the cement floor. Next Friday I will get a Python, the real trick will be finding a 30-50 foot extension hose!

I wouldn't use the same Python for your turtles & fish.

Great point! I hadn't even thought of that. Well, it will be the python for the fish and the buckets for the turtle. I would feel horrible if any of them got sick. Thank you.
