Pepsi hurt his eye :(

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Pepsi hurt his eye :(

Post by Pandora114 »

I was changing his water yesterday, had to take out the decorations to wash em up because we are having a rather nasty Cyanno issue (Gonna get Red Slime remover soon) well I guess he freaked out so bad because he had a naked tank that he injured his eye.

Amm: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate <5 SG 1.011

Just Pepsi the GSP

%50 WC yesterday, washed plastic plant decorations to lower the Cyanno, and dumped some flourish Excell in as a preliminary kill it off a bit measure as I read on BCAquaria's forums.

I mixed the salt in with a Tetra Power filter then aged the water for 24-48hrs before

Looks like he scratched his Cornea. I feel so awful...I need to go get some Melafix..this is one of those occasions I wish I had more than my permit right now :(

I can't take a picture because he's feeling rather sorry for himself, and I wouldn't blame him. He's also very mad at me.

I'll prep another %50 WC to keep the pollutants down. I'll tell the man to go pick up some melafix tonight, that it can't wait. Hopefully we can go and I can price the live rock and sand so we have time to save up for it.

Anyway, since he's in an SG of 1.011 should I get the Marine Melafix or stay with the fresh water stuff?

Aww, I hope he gets better fast. I believe you use the FW melafix. I'd be very careful not to scare him at all.

He's doing better today, his eye has healed up even without the melafix! We're still picking some up on Sat though. I think his fast healing has to do with the pristine water (0amm 0Nitrite and less than 5 nitrates)

He was his usual enthusiastic wriggly self at the front of the tank this morning, and he had a piece of smashed up clam for breakky.

despite the cyanno issue >.<

Corneal/eye tissue is one of the fastest healing tissues in most creatures. On a human corneal abrasions and lacerations are nearly healed within 24 hours....

and it would probably heal much faster in a fish since they don't have any eyelids.

Marine Melafix is to keep skimmers from bubbling over. You don't need it unless you have a skimmer.

Poor little guy. I can sympathize on the permit thing. I remember needing Prime so freaking bad!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Consider yourself lucky, when Shakespeare was in my care for but a few months, he scratched one of his eyes - the resulting infection scarred the cornea, he's blind in that eye. He seems to get on just fine with his blind side though.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.
