+1 on feeding. The last thing you want is a zillion dead snails in there. However, if you slowly cut back the amount of food, they'll probably breed less.

I just cleaned out the tank and added an algea wafer. The crab likes these and the worms. I don't mind if they breed- so far. 
On to test the puffer tank and do a water change there, too.

In large numbers, they can destroy your plants, but Squirt will probably take care of that for you.
