My plan to feed my F8 with 100% live food

Post by joseche »

Hi all,

I am planning on having a 10G tank with plants, red cherry and apple snails, and from time to time take some of the young snails and shrimps to the tank where I have my F8, is that a good idea ?, also, if I have overcrowded the food tank, may I just put the F8 there for a week or something to get him do some population control ?, isn't that bad because of the water change ? (from brackish to fresh)

If you put him in the food tank he may eat everything in site. Most puffer's will eat until they pop. :D I'm not sure that would be a very good idea. As for feeding 100% live food: make sure the live food is filled with vitamin rich food for the puffer before feeding. If you can produce enough food to keep the puffer fed. Personally I spend around $30 about every six weeks at the local grocery store for puffer food. I haven't been able to produce enough live food to feed them. But my puffer's are the large species.

Note: Snails and shrimp will not be enough variety in their diet. Please read the feeding article in the library under the learn tab.

That is an excellent plan, raising your own live food. Moving the puffer to the live food tank probably isn't such a good idea though, as that water is usually dirtier and as edmlfc1 said, some puffers will literally eat until they split open and die.

Snails should be the main part of an ideal puffer diet, but mixing in some other stuff is always a great idea.
