Feeding fiddler crabs to puffs!

Post by lilgirlkat »

I thought my puffs needed a little treat, so I went out and got some female fiddler crabs. I had to go to work, so I don't have any video of the noshing that followed, but I will say that the only puff tough enough to get to the meat of the crab was my ceylon.

The GSP just ate off the eyes.. then eventually the legs.. so now there's just a body on the substrate. It was so sad to see the little crab looking for her eyes with her claws.

The Ceylon DEMOLISHED the little crab. Went for her eyes and legs first, and by the end of the night, there was no more crab! He looks so happy and proud of himself!

The MBU... well... doesn't even know there's a crab in his tank. We thought that maaaaybe, just maybe the MBU would be able to see movement or *something*, but nothing. Dropped the little crab right in front of him and he didn't even notice. :( So now we have a pet fiddler crab (which will eventually be fed to the Ceylon).

Is there any way you guys feed this kinda food to your puff that helps them get into their shells a little more? The GSP was so excited about the crab, but just couldn't seem to crack it.

Awesome vids! I love feeding fiddlers to my Turgdis and Suvatti. I do it about every two weeks because the LFS gives me all theirs that don't have claws or are missing a leg or two. My GSP has never eaten a whole one. I gave him a live one and that was a gruesome few hours...he picked it to death, just like yours did. I started cutting them in half (yuck) and then dropping them in there. He does OK with that...

Today she did. She ate the ghost shrimp. I was taking the driftwood out of the tank to give it a good scrubbing for the algea problem I'm having. I totally forgot about the ghost shrimp until I saw Annabelle coming straight for me! I thought she was coming to attack me! That's when I realized the ghost shrimp were under that log and she spotted them. Without the driftwood they didn't stand a chance. She managed to find and eat all 5 of them.

Annabelle is sooooo pretty! I can't wait till Puffy gets that big. :D
I have mixed feelings about feeding crabs. I think it would be soo awesome but then again, I have one as a pet and couldn't bear to do that to the poor little thing.

I may be bias because I own a Fiddler crab but i feel that I should point out that Fiddler crabs have a complex breeding cycle that can't be replicated in a home aquarium.

Many snail & shrimp species can be bred in a home aquarium.

something *happened* to the lone fiddler crab in the MBU tank last night. I found her dead, with a split down her stomach and missing her front claws..

I think she got attacked!

Or the crab could have molted. You'll probably find out in a few days. When they molt, the old shell look just like dead crabs in my opinion...

I agree with RR, there is a chance it just molted...I got fooled by my emerald crab....he molted in one solid piece and well...had me fooled.

I keep fiddlers as pets. They're one thing I won't feed to my puffers. I originally bought them as puffer food, but just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I thought about that.. but there's a line down the middle of the shell that shows off the crab's meat rather nicely..
